IOThe Barrie Examiner Frida June II I976 SPORTS WHEEL Peden fame still glowing By ED HARPER Chay Torchy Peden the king of bicycle racing back in the 1930s was in Toronto last weekend It was great thrill for me to meet With Torchy again and to talk over old times raced in several sixday races against him and his grother Doug and it had been 11 years since had last seen im The occasion of Torchy coming to Toronto brought several old time bicycle racers out and we had great reu nion Some even came with their old bicycles which were bUilt back in the early 1930s But it was Torchys day and old and young alike were around him shaking his hand or asking for his autograph whilst the stars of today raced in 40 mile bicycle race around Queens Park in Toronto At one time Torchy was described in the New York Times as being more popular than Babe Ruth great tribute to the big redhead who stood ft in and weighed 225 lbs when he was at his peak Christiened William John Peden he was born in Victoria BC in 1905 As youth he played baseball football and hockey His mother encourage him to bicycle race and in 1928 he represented Canada at the Olympics in Amsterdam He was on team with the late Louis Elder Jean La Porte and Albert Tourville One of Torchys bicyles has been gold plated and placed in the Sports Hall of Fame at the Canadian National Exhibi tion in Toronto It has been there for several years now and is one of the most popular pieces of sports equipment in the Hall of Fame Torchy lives in the suburbs of Northbrook Illinois with his wife Annemae whom he met at sixday bicycle race in Chicago in 1935 and married 10 years later He rode his first sixday race in 1929 in the Montreal Forum where he finished second riding with Canadian by the name of Bill Coles In all he rode 140 sixday races and was one of the highest paid athletes of his time Peden is legend in his time All of the riders racing today know the name of Torchy Peden and not only riders but young girls and boys who have seen him at various pro motional ventures for sports equipment throughout the years He will be at the Olympics in Monteal for three weeks this summer as Honorary Chairman of the Canadian Cycling Team Although Torchy has lived in the United States for Sany years he loves Canada and the Canadians sure love im Peden spends much of his spare time coaching young bicycle riders in his home town in the art of racing He was instrumental in building board track on the grounds of Loyola College in Northbrook Ill At age 72 he still rides his bicycle lot and they say that he can still ride fast spring And looking at him can well believe that he could show up some of our younger riders How many athletes competing today will be known throughout the world when they are 72 years of age
