NO REGIONAL RULE McKEOUGH ASSURES Task force strategy stirs debates MIDHURST Staff Assurance by Ontario treasurer Darcy McKeough that the trovince has no intention of im ing regional government on mcoe County was generally received with satisfaction in munty circles but there was some apprehension noted over her implications During lively question period at the county meeting af ter Mr McKeough said the Simcoe Georgian area task for ce final report had been ac cepted in principle only the povincial treasurer told Reeve Alan Johnston of Vespra that the government would be glad to see municipalities settle an nexation boundaries among themselves This would effect sizeable saving to taxpayers he conceded There has been nearly 10 years of input and it had now reached the place where it was the aim to have im plementation of the plan this year said the provincial treasurer Reeve Johnston objected strongly to Barries present an nexation proposals for 4500 acres of Vespra territory We felt this would be done over long period he said referring to the task force plan for the year 2011 Annexations in stages as required for develop ment would cause less dismp tion ASSESSMENT While he was glad to hear re ional overnment had been re ected or Simcoe County he mggested if the larger centres like Barrie took over the in dustrial and other hi assessment properties niral munic ities might eventually be riven to seek it as means of recovering loss of revenue Simcoe County council had opposed re onal government moves at di ferent times durin the past decade review minutes showed Higher costs and taxes in regional areas were frequently cited Mr McKeough suggested if the city of Barrie and the four neighboring townships men tioned in the task force report Innisfil Vespra Essa and Oro would get together and come up with mutual agreement to set tle boundaries this would be ï¬ne But this hasnt happened in 10 years he ointed out cautiously then ded the com ment If they can get together and agree upon plan it would save taxpayers more money REEVE JOHNSTON outlines views Main attention had been cen tred on Barrie future growth area as start with Orillia area to be dealt with
