for Collingwood By BILL CURRAN Baseball prospects for Collingwood Cavemen appear to be much brighter this spring judging from the good tut nouts and enthusiasm shown in practice sessions at Kinsmens Park Don Westbrooke Leo Powell and Jim Hill of last years hurling staff have been smoking them over the plate while newcomers Sam McAllister and Gary Hill also have been taking turns on the mound Bill Switzer who took whirl at pro ball last year has been among the infielders out with the team He has strong arm which gave him the thirdbase post last year and be rated as one of the leagues best hitters Coach Jim Tub Barrett also has infielders Bill Phillips Gary Sproule Paul Carruthers and Jim Leonard back from last years club The three pitchers are capable fielders and isually roatate in the infield when not on the mound Bill Mackie Mike Garbutt and Bill McCutcheon are others who have been trying out for infield positions Mike Barrett and Jack Foley the latter of Wasaga Beach have been catching while Bill Calvert and Sam Cresswell from last years team and John Beau rie have been showing up well in the outfield All are good hawks Coach Barrett has Sam McCutcheon assisting him in piloting the club with Les Coulson and Tommy Brown managers The club has been practising on Monday Wednesday and Friday evenings at the Kinsmens park at Second and Spruce streets TEAM HAS BEEN COMING AHEAD The Cavemen have shown improvement each season since making baseball comeback four years ago With the right breaks the club could develop into serious contender for laurels this year Last year the Cavemen made the playoffs before losing out two straight to the strong Orillia Majors who again cap tured the championship With the Majors having difficulties getting some of their veteran stars back in action it is believed there is good chance of the Simcoe County honors going elsewhere Southpaw Brock Richardson who beat out Collingwood in last years playoffs has had arm troubles and may not be pitching this year The Majors also have nt yet signed their righthanded ace eri Buck Udell who has been talking about pitching for Little Brittain in the Eastern loop The Orillia entry is likely to have to depend on more junior players to fill in the gaps Pete Koehli will be replacement for Richardson Others also were made available through the Junior Pontiacs withdrawing from the league We couldnt do much else since we didnt have enough players turn out for our practices said Grant Gander Ross explaining the decision to withdraw good baseball town Collingwood has had some stan dout teams in the past The record shows its greatest team was in 1935 when lefthander named Deverede Smokey Smith now of Barrie was the pitching ace The team beat out Hagersville in the finals for the Ontario intermediate championship Smiths superb pitching was usually given the main credit but he was also leading hitter First baseman John Dobson Barrie resident second sacker Stan Swain and outfielders Huck Caesar and Buck Oliver were other top Sluggers Catcher Paddy Young was also star along with Reg Westbrooke who then was perhaps better known for his stellar hockey goaltending Roy Burmister one of Collingwoods pro hockeyists was manger of that memorable club which had mascot named Donald Spooner sometimes called Nip SMITH OUTDUELS PHIL MARCHILDON Perhaps surprising enough Collingwoods major obstacle in the way of the 1935 championship was right in the Georgian Bay league in the form of the Penetang club At that time Penetang had pitcher of exceptional abili ty known as Phil Marchildon The brilliant pitching duels between Phil and Smokey are reflected by the scores to for Collingwood then all to for Penetang and to again Marchildon subsequently went up to major league baseball where he became standout with the old Philadelphia Athletics of which more will be recalled in later column Jimmy Bald at first Harold Crippen at short and Marius Bald in the outfield were among other outstanding Penetang ball players at the time Other memorable names on that noted team included Symons Spearn Devillers Murry and McCuaig to mention few more In winning the championship Collingwood won 27 games tied three and lost only five during the season two of the lat ter to Penetang Smith was credited with striking out some 310 batters including 21 in one game He also hurled two no hitters Among the teams he defeated regularly was Barrie GOOD ALLISTON LACROSSE CLUB An Alliston lacrosse fan has forwarded an old clipping telling about the Alliston Athletics which reached the in termediate OLA finals before losing out to Fergus Thistles back 21 years ago Hec MacKenzie Colly Whelan Bill Gray and Aden Whelan were some of the stalwarts of that Alliston team which beat out Toronto Maitlands in the semifinals and Bradford in earlier playoffs Although they lost all four games to Fergus the Athletics fought hard all the way The scores were 15 to 13 to 10 to and 10 to The fine goaltending of Jim Dodds was given special mention On the subject of oldtime lacrosse again Orillia juveniles of 1952 captured the provincial championship by taking Port Dalhousie 17 to 14 in the home and home finals The Orillia team lost away to and then won at home 10 to Peter Scarlett Jack Curran Blake Uren and Ted Hawke were scoring leaders for Orillia with Frank Nettleton and Tex Kehoe defence mainstays Keith Dunford was stan dout in goal SPORTS CALENDAR SOCCER pm at Steele Street Aurora vs Barrie City BANQUET 530 pm at Barrie Ar moury Barrie Minor Hockey torswell
