SPORTS WHEEL From combat to Olympics By ED HARPER Chay As mentioned previously in this column will from time to time until the start of the Olympic Games be givmg the history of various Olympic events Fencmg is becoming more popular sports event at all international meets Fencing which means the art of fence defense or offence has been both form of sport also method of deadly combat down through the cen ries manuscript dated 1410 describes fencing as sport in Germany in 1383 Undoubtedly it was fairly well established by that time and thus its origin must have been at least 50 years earlier This seems to discount Italys claim as creator of fencing for the sport was practically unknown there until the early part of the 15th century In the middle of the 15th century fencing became so popular in Germany that fencers formed themselves into gilds clubs Italy kept pace with Germany in popularizing fencing through the 15th century and the sport spread to France and then to Spain English rulers opposed fencing until the reign of King Henry VIII 15091547 He considered it splendid form of sport and encouraged it SWORDS WERE NOT UNIFORM The swords used throughout the centuries were not uniform Italy used the long thin rapier France used short swords so short they were little more than long daggers German sw0rds were rather closely related to the Italian but Englands reliance was on the heavy broadsword while Spains fencers called miscellaneous set into action Fencing has never had spectacular growth but in one form or another it has been carried to the four corners of the world and standardized rules have been formulated and published by the Federation Internationale dEscrime of which fencing federations of the principal nations of Europe and America are members The larger nations arrange annual championship tour naments and send their most brilliant swordsmen into competition for international honors these events culminating every four years in the Olympic Fencing Giampionships GREW FROM SERIOUS COMBAT In most nations fencing as sport grew out of more serious combat In the earlier histories of the countgries duelling was not unknown and instruction with the sw0rd constituted an important and serious part of military train ing Most naval forces almost up to Civil War times used the cutlass in boarding enemy vessels Even in the United States there is tradition of swordfighting For instance up to 40 or 50 years ago the cavalry sword was still regula tion equipment for every soldier in the US Army In some parts of Europe fencing still has high priority on the list of things every wellbroughtup young man ought to know Wherever blue blood still flows and ancentral lands are still kept and wherever the traditions of religion and patriarchy still flourish you will find champion fencers The masters of tournament fencing are the Hungarians the Italians the French and the Germans The Italians are masters of the rapier and the Hungarians excell with sabers which they have used since being conquered by the Arabs and their famous scimitars POINTS FROM SCARRING FOE In Germany they still vigorously practice the sport of Schlager vicious kind of fencing with type of broadsword called glaive Points are scored by scarring the opponent and many is the German even today who wears his Schlager scars proudly In North America however fencing is popular sport in colleges and universities Fencing is strictly an amateur sport at all levels In Olympic competition there are events for all three types of weapons the epee the foil and the saber The epee has blunted rigid 35 blade with no cutting edge The foil has lighter more flexible blade and the saber has an arcshaped guard with tapering flexible blade about 41 long that has one full cutting edge and an eight inch cut ting edge on the back at the tip SEASON COMING The fastball season is only Cher Dan Duffy got some days away from officially action this week when
