the battle against inflation and expected to win votes after its new pay pact with trade unions announced this week GARDEN NOTES Planting economical vines ByJEAN GABLE Barrie Horticultural Society It amazes me how few people seem interested in planting vines Vines are really one of the most economical and rewarding species of plants to use in home landscaping Lets discuss vines Clematis likes western exposure best but will do well in an eastern and southern exposure providing its roots are well shaded This can be done by putting large half plant pot propped on slant over the bare of the plant or by planting something near by that will shade the roots They come in lovely shades and make fresh growth each year cut mine down to foot from the ground each fall Climbing Hydrangea comparatively new vine likps to cling to stone or brick wall requ1res some support to get started and may require few anchors to hold it here and there It has lovely lush green foliage and most beautiful creamywhite large clusters of bloom Wisteria is not hardy in this area It may survive but the amount of bloom youll get if any is not worth the dfort Trumpet Vine grows well in Barrie Is not always easy to get started but old established plants bloom well Have seen some fine specimens around some older homes in Barrie Dont see many around newer homes because it is not available usually unless you send to large nursery for it English Ivy makes very pretty ground cover and will also survive as climber but naturally doesnt grow like it does in England or in Vancouver Boston lvy ideal if you like lot of greenery on your wall Ours is planted on the north side of the house just one plant and it covers almost half of the wall and fights my husband to get into the chimney all the time could weep after the battles they have Virginia Creeper is very hardy and looks beautiful in thefall American Bittersweet good native climber has glossy green leaves and or namental berries that are ideal for arrangements All these vines mentioned are perennials but we have some good annual vines also Morning Glory comes in shades of white and blue and there are some new hybrids This is an old favorite easily grown and makes real show in late summerandfall Canary Vine has pret ty leaf and the dainty yellow flowers are nice for trellis Scarlet Runner Bean another old favorite and 15in grown Soak the beans in water overnight and theyll sprout faster Of course the climbing roses can be used as climbers but they are not true climbers because they must be sup ported on trellis or something like that They are really in class by them selves like all roses are If it is the back fence you could consider grapes there are number of varieties hardy here Sweet Peas or even small varieites of squash If you are interested in the botanical names of any of these or even for more detailed information send to Information Dept Canada Dept of Agriculture Ottawa for publication 1017 It is called
