I2The Barrie Examiner Saturdo Mo I976 COUNTY SPORTS Majors encounter early obstacles BILL CURRAN While he confirmedy the club has run into difficulties in getting all the prospective players out to early drills veteran player and coach Doug Howard insists the Orillia Majors will be back in the Simcoe County league with team worthy of defending the championship Whenever we called practice sessions we ran into cold spells and that spoiled things said the 41yearold baseball payer who moved to Orillia from Shelburne 15 years ago We ex to have most of lst years players out and if we do we ould have contending team again Much depends on Orillia native Jerry Buck Udell and whether he has another top year on the mound In the past six years he has pitched for five county league champions In 1969 and 1970 Udell hurled the Orillia juniors to the county championship Then in 1971 73 74 and 75 he was pitching stalwart with the senior Majors In 1972 Ivy Leafs captured the county laurels Udell and catcher Wally McMillan have been approached by Little Brittain club of the Eastern aseball league where they have both played before We dont mind so long as they are available for our coun ty league games and OBA playoffs said Howard who is sharing the coaching responsibilities of this years Majors with Pat Henness The Orillia cluli hopes to sign Barries Nick Owen and perhaps one or two other Barrie players of OBA games The rules say they can play for the nearest senior team and if Barrie doesnt enter that series it would make them eligible for us explained the Orillia pilot Lefthanded pitcher Brock Richardson who turned in some stellar mound efforts last year has been suffering from an arm injury but club officials hope he will be out with the team later Another pitcher of ability is Doug Roe who improved considerably last year In early workouts the Majors have had Rick Watters at first Tim Olimer and Dave Wilkie at second Lorne Win rove at short and Doug Roe at third Jerry Varey is ano er good infielder who has shown up weill in drills Udell usually plays the outfield when ot pitching because his hitting since he is one of the best slu ggers with the club Andy Rowe Mel and Murray St Onge and Bob Tucker ppears like the pick of other outfielders out so far The ub has called another practice for tomorrow SEES CREEMORE IVY RIVALRY We really dont know et like strong clubs repli but Creemore and Ivy look Coach Howard when asked his pinion of rival clubs which should give the Majors their toughest opposition We would say Barrie should be tough too he said stating pitching ace Mel Kennedy will be missed But there were others coming along who should improve And Nick Owen is one of the best allround players in the bagUen Alliston Canucks and Beeton Beehives usually have ag gessive teams Collin gwood and Midland are old baseball towns which cant be underta ted There is always the chance of some club doing the unex pected he said citing instances few years ago when Qillia Juniors upset the highlyfavored Majors in the coun tyfinals Lea gue records show the Majors have captured the coun title eight times in 12 years and reached the finals on cc of the other four occasions Certainly well be trying to make it nine out of 13 but were not making any predictions answered Howard cautioust when asked what he thought about the Majors chances in the coming campaign slated to open later this month It could be close race STAYNER CELEBRATES HOCKEY WIN While others are getting ready for baseball at Stayner sport fans are still celebrating the success
