SPORTS WHEEL More city aid By Ed Harper Chay The Barrie Optimist Minor Soccer Association is about to start another season The following fields have been booked for league use Monday Steele and Johnson Street Tuesday and Thursday Steele Johnson Maple Grove upper Radio Shack and and Allandale Heights Sunday Steele Street Fairgrounds The league was notified by the department of recreation that they would have to put the lines on the fields themselves this year It seems that the department of recreation is suffering budget restraints It is my opinion that when it comes to keeping over 800 youngster busy for the summer there should be no budget restraints It was stated in recent letter from the recreation department to the minor soccer league that Eastview Park should not be used this summer as great deal of effort and money had been spent in developing the soccer pitch and that they want to be sure that the grass seed takes before anyone is allowed to play on it ROLLING FIELDS After looking the field over at Eastview would say that the money would have been better spent rolling and lining the fields that can be used have never been in favor of Eastview as place for an arena or for sports fields The ground is not the best for sports field as it is too damp and takes too long to dry out saw the track at Eastview Col legiate partly covered with water during hot spell last summer In order to line the fields and smooth the surface at Radio Shack it means at least another two or three volunteers and the minor soccer league is short of help now They could use several more adults to help this summer in the running of the many teams It is not healthy situation when an association that looks after as many of our youth as the Optimist Minor Soccer Association does has to worry about where they are going to play the condition of the fields and now even have to put the lines on the fields with volunteer help It is no wonder that it is getting harder for the associations that work with our youth to get volunteers for their projects The Barrie Optimist Minor Soccer Association has done great job of raising money to finance the many costs associated with providing organized soccer for the kids in our area They not only supply jerseys and equipment they send teams to tournaments and also hold tournaments in Barrie where hundreds of people come and spend money in the city LOT OF GLORY In the past the youth of Barrie have brought lot of glory to the city in all sports fields The Barrie minor hockey teams the minor lacrosse teams the Huronia Striders Track and Field Club and the Barrie Minor Soccer Associa tjon teams are just few How can the City of Barrie put budget restrictions on the activities that help to keep our youth out of trouble teach good sportsmanship and most of all help to develop our youth into the good citiziens who will be making us proud in the future If all the minor sports associations that mentioned above were to stop operating in Barrie the city would need not less needed more police more courtrooms more judges and more jails The price of keeping our youth busy is very small lets not talk about budget restrictions when it comes to helping them College offers training program new dimension in in structor training will be in troduced into the 1976 Sailing School being operated by the Ontario Sailing Association
