I2The Barrie Examiner Thursday May 61976 SPORTS CORNER Public meeting on guncontrol By RANDY MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor The Barrie Hunters and An lers Conservation Club will give the gun control section Bill C83 public airingout Monday The roposed gun control legislation now bei debated by Par iament is still source of controversy an at times heated exchanges between members of outdoor clubs in dividual unowners and members of parliament responsi ble for se ing the Bill to the public Mondays meeting is intended to alert the general public as to what the pro sed controls are what they mean and the stand taken area clubs This is great deal of misunderstanding surrounding the throsed guncontrol legislation of the govemments Peace an Security Bill The public meeting which is set for pm in the Eastview Secondary School cafeteria is intended to answer as many questions as possible It is also intended to add little more weight to gathering united front of protest against certain aspects of the controls This is not the first meeting of its kind nor will it be the last There was rather unfruitful meeting in Orangeville and reasonably successful public gathering in Alliston short time ago The Alliston Rod and Gun Club has emerged as strong ponent of the proposed controls The club has taken the bill and broken it down paragraph by paragraph word by word said club official Doug McBride Alliston as well as representatives from area clubs will be at Mondays meeting Its too time consuming to present it paragra by paragraph clause by clause but we can give con ensed version of what this bill is over and above what the existing laws were and what the basic changes are between the old laws and the new lawas and how they are going to affect the individual McBride said He said that government welcomes input from associa tions and from individuals anything constructive that is We felt we had an obligation since we are on the know of this bill and have copies of it and know the implications in volved we felt we should alert the rest of the public as many people interested as to what it was all about The meeting is intended to follow give and take vein The Alliston club for example will present what it has discovered and what it has done with regards to proposed controls The Barrie club is expected to take vocal part ot alert the public as to what the Barrie Club has done on the issue basically to present its viewpoint Clubs individuals associations have come out against gie proposed controls What appears to be lacking is unit ont We feel along the same lines McBride said There are number of associations across Canada that have taken similar parallels to ours and we feel that there may be some asset in the immediate future for an overall formation of national body as representation of the na tional body This national body would be available to discuss in the future anything that might arise or at least be in position to input on national level Its general concensus that some action must be taken now if only out of necessity but that national body would more accurately reflect the feelings of the entire country Basically the Monday meeting is an informationtype meeting where clubs want to point out to the public what legislation is and how its going to affect the individual Horefully the individual will than make his own decision and mm that point voice his views either individually or collectively through clubs or associations CORNER VIEWSOrillia Packet and Times has come out strong against the gun control section of Bill C83 The daily says the proposed controls would impose costly undemocratic regulations on lawabiding gunowners while doing nothing to control the use of guns by criminals Government stand centres around the reduction of violent acts using firearms to help alleviate the increasing public fear and concern over growing firearms misuse to en courage responsible use and ownershi of firearms to achieve this without unduly restricting Tegitimate recrea tional pursuits by responsible gunowners Barrie Raceway results Wednesday May 6TH COND TROT MILE $5 PostTime7z45 pm Lady Demon 1230 470 3I0 Maxines Gal 430
