24The Barrie Examiner Friday April 30 1976 LOCHLO FARM Model By BRIAN BAKER TOlIENHAM Divided between cow calf beef aeration and high class roducer of Charolais eeding stock one of the most interesting farms in Simcoe County to visit is Lochlo Charolais farm of RR Tottenham on Hi way 27 owned by John an Alberta Devins The Devins have been in the Charolais breeding business for five years ob taining breeding stock from some of the best herds in France Previously they were engaged in largescale dairy operation with Holstein cows The writer found that the entire operation from the ground up was most in teresting not the least the fact that 159 head of cattle are kept and kept well on just 150 acres of land Two big silos form the heart of the feeding system one 24 feet by 60 feet high med entirely for corn en silage and one 20 feet by 60 feet which is filled with grass haylage early in the summer to carry the herd through un til fall when the corn ensilage takes over for the winter The first silo automatically unloads into an eightfoot long auger bunk feeder in side the huge pole barn in an area reserved for wmter feeding and ioafing The second silo is equipped with Lazv Susan circular feeder which rotates around the base of the silo as it is being filled from above by the unloading mechanism giving the cattle some 60 feet of feeding space all around the base of the silo Concrete surfaced yards abound the silos and areas where the cattle spend most time around the buildings makes cleanup operations with tractor scraper and loader simple matter The main housing barn is 1e ty structure 180 feet ong an 100 feet deep one part of which is reserved for the bunk feeder and the north part of which is reserved for sleeping This is the freestall setup iriginally used by the old dairy cow herd It serves equally well for the beef animals because they can go up into the individual sta is and lie down in the clean and so efficient is this housing arrangement that for the en tire herd in this section only bales of straw week are med and this is used largely to facilitate the cleanout operation N0 IDLE LAND On this farm we make the land work there is no room for idle land around here remarks herdsman Lee Rin toul For instance we only have 30 acres of pasture seeded to trefoil which withstands heavy grazing This is used as much for exer cise as anything Then we grow 35 acres of corn enough to fill the one silo and top the other one up in the fall We are really proud of our alfalfa which takes up the nest of the farm Last year we took off three heavy crops of Alfalfa and then we had Maynards of Schomberg come in and take off good fourth cropt which they brought to kiln dry for use in poultry feeds Since production of large antities of good quality eed are so im rtant to the most efficient and cow calf operation they do not neglect to feed the land with big tonnages of litter from the barn and some 300 pounds of artificial fertilizer according to soil test indications For the main hay crop they grow pure stands of alfalfa which cm is well suited to the well rained but heavy Schomberg clay Trefoil they ï¬nd is as good reducer but stands up best all to the trampling fect of pasturing funilmals and does not winter We actually run cow calf operation as purebed operation says Mr Rintoui It is fact that good breeding stock in Charolais is still very much in demand and it is hard to keep up with that demand In fact last vear we tur ned things around by sending the first purebred Charolais bull back to France where buyers paid $19000 The Devins show their rebred Charolais widely including at local shows and the United States and Calgary and Regina One young bull was grand champion at the Royal Win ter Fair two years ago Another was reserve cham pion last year at the Royal One was supreme cham pon at Barrie last year and also at Orangevilie 0f four head of animals shown at Calgary St year from the Lochlo herd two won second two won fourth prizes in class of 35 from all across Canada As examples of the weight ï¬ns made by animals in the hlo erd Mr Rintoul said one bull at three years of LEE RINTOUL her dsman shows huge age had reached 2700 poun and another at 18 months geighed well over 1800 poun He explained that good beef production through good feeding and good production through good breeding are two different things You can not have efficient beef oduction just through good eeding and management alone good weight gaining characteristics must be built in trait or much of your good management and good feeding practices are wasted group of deeply bedded young bulls being prepared for show purposes were con tentedly chewing their cuds in secluded area of the barn In this operation we keep the calves with their mothers for the first month remarks Mr Rintoui After that the calves have limited twice by access to their mothers when the mothers are let into the calf barn where they are fed and tied up while the wives take their milk This allows us to feed the calves separately from their Lochlo purebred Charolais bull that in 1974 took the mothers Since the calves need higher protein ration in ad dition to the milk than the cows We wean the calves at about six to seven months at which time they weigh around 600 to 700 pounds this allows the cows to build up for the next calving 3000 BALES Surprisingly according to Mr Rintoul they feed only about 3000 bales of hay year to the entire herd the rest being made up with en silage fed automatically from the silos They use mixall feed chopper and mixer They prepare grain ration using natural protein feeds like soy beans in preference to com mercially prepared con centrate Cows are fed the grain ration sparingly to prevent overfattening Manure is cleaned out and spread directly on the land twice week throughout the year Herd health is maintained in number of ways Con tributing most to the health of the herd is good ventilation Sure
