accused Industry Minister Don Jamieson and his departmental officials Wednesday of failing to act quickly enough to protect Canadian textile and clothing manufacturers from harmful competition by cheap im ports The accusations flew as Mr Jamieson and his of ï¬cials appeared before the sixth session of the banking committee which is con ducting an inquiry into what industry officials say are deteriorating conditions for Canadian manufacturers Specifically they criticized Mr Jamieson for failing to place immediate quotas on imports of winter outerwear from five Southeast Asian countries as recommended in report of the Textile and Clothing Board tw0 weeks tile impor The board established five years ago to look into in dustry complaints of harmful imports concluded after an inquiry that imports of ski jackets snow suits and parkas from the five cheap labor countries constituted serious disru tion of the Canadian mar et and that import quotas should be established for threeyear period Coast guard to recommend search and rescue takeover OTTAWA CP The Coast Guard is preparing to recommend to cabinet that it take charge of all marine search and rescue on the coasts and the Great Lakes Government officials said the recommendation would mean thut in the case of vessels in trouble the coast guard not armed forces rescue coordination centres would be in charge The recommendation is one made on the basis of new information received last week from the United Steelworkers of America and INCO officials the board said in prepared statement spokesman said it was not known when final decision will be made The board announced two weeks ago that the negotiated pay raise in threeyear con tract was excessive und should be reduced to steps of 129 eight and six per cent from 185 73 and 63 per cent The case has prompted op position attacks on the government in the House Company and union of ï¬cials as well as residents of Thompson have argued the reduction threatens existence of the
