RYNARD MP Simcoe North We are now facing an energy crisis We have mov ed into position where we are not producing enough oil for home consum tion The amount oil we sell does not balance out with the oil we have to buy In spite of all this Dome Petroleum Limited finds itself in dilemma of frustration Dome had planned drilling ventures in the Beaufort Sea in the Arctic this summer Dome with its partners and working in liaison with the government has designed what they believe to be foolproof drilling operation which will provide the greatest protection against the danger of leakage of either gas or oil Their aim of course is to test the potential of the oil and gas that may be found in the area in the deeper sec tions of the Beaufort Sea APPROVED IN PRINCIPLE Ottawa has had the op portunity and has studied the equipment and resources Dome has against ciple the venture in March 1974 Three weeks ago government post oned its decision and faile to give permit to allow the drilling to go ahead giving as an excuse that more consultation was needed locally nationally Ilution and in fact approve in prin the and internationally You ask yourself why after over two years and approvalinprinciple The answer is found in the gradually increasing pressure from environmental groups who are trying to stop the drilling because of the risk of damage to the ecology from possible oil spill One of the Environmental Protection Groups is being advised by Mel Watkins at reported salary of $40000 per year Mr Watkins you may recall was the leader of the radical Waffle group of the New Democratic Party It is interesting to note that there are over 22 million Canadians living south of the 60th parallel while in the Nor th West Territories and the Yukon there are approx imately 50000 people Metropolitan Makes Appointments Barrie Mr BOB NICHOLSON 4363214 their new positions Dave ociates in the Barrie office are inuing and extending the ser 43632I ock worry 7263822 EAST BARRIE GEORGIAN MALL STORE HOURS demonstrates their knowhow and efficiency In the last 11 years Dome has drilled close to 800 wells with not one blowout and never drop of oil lost in the Beaufort Sea Ice of course is the big danger and drilling must be done in the three to four mon ths of open water The only problem they would have to watch for would be shifting ice Drilling could be discon tinued and automatically sealing off of the pipe with 10000 pounds per square inch Certainly any ot the Native claims for damage to the ecolog should be settled equita ly and quickly but they should not be able to deny the development of an area which would be of benefit to all Canadians 1n Ontario with its great density of population all lines were just built and the land claims were settled after wards However Dom Petroleum contends that an oil ill is almost impOSSlbIe All nown precautions have been taken backed by many years of experience blowout preventer The drill Domes record over the mg rigs Would three months or three years make us any more certain of the risks of drilling for oil which we badly need It will take about nine years to get the oil ready for use As is wellknown the Beaufort
