separate then it must have been unbearably bad before and shame on you for dragging him through the mess Malcolm Summers social worker with the Childrens Aid Society spoke on the effect of separation on children recently at the fourth in the Single Again Series sponsored by the Family Life Association and Parents Without Partners Before the separation there are often months or years before in which continual quarrelling makes an un pleasant home for the child Mr Summers said regardless of who is to blame isnt it too bad that the child has to go through this Several of those who attended who were single parents defen ded their position saying the reason for this is because most couples try sincerely to get along for the sake of the children Sure its too bad one man said but what is the alter native Mr Summers suggested that while it is not possible to shield the child from all friction could the parents not try to settle disputesprivately PEOPLE AND PLACES BALI BARRIE lhe Barrie The most common mistakes he said are such things as buying gifts or degrading the other parent The biggest mistake is treating him as your peer Mr Summers cautioned Dont try to relate to him as brother sister or make him feel like he has to be the man of the house child has to go through cer tain stages so he has to have the opportunity to be child In many cases the child shows indifference after separation This could be for many reasons He could feel he is guilty for his parents separation or he may simply be unaccustomed to ex pressing his feelings he said Its important that the child does express how he feels He should be encouraged to grieve Boys particularly grow up feeling they aren allowed to cry and this com plicates the situation further hesaid Next week Single Again will because of de rooted social prejudice agxist the obese of all ages ac cor ing to Dr Richard Gold blo of Dalhousie University inHalifax Addressing the Kellogg Nutrition Symposium in Toron to recently on Obesity in Childhood Dr Goldbloom said our bias was rationalized by invoking inadequately documented risks to health without really knowing whether obesity is the cause or merely the companion of those widely advertised risks Even worse he continued we are unable to offer to the obese treatment that has been proven effective or to the potentially obese similarly validated means of prevention Dr Goldbloom Professor and Head of the Department of Pediatrics at Dalhousie Univer sity and IhysicianinChief of Isaak Walton Killam Hospital for Children cited three other factors which hamper the development of rational per spective of childhood obesity Instead of accepting obesity as complex result of various genetic metabolic neuroanatomic or psychological disorders there is tendency to regard it as single phenomenon or disease of calorie imbalance Secondly there is lack of detailed scientific un derstanding of the mechanisms by which obesity develops Thirdly both the scientific and lay communities tend to instant extrapolation of isolated scientific observations to provide quick answers to the prevention or treatment of the obese state without adequate proof If we are to be completely honest with ourselves we might accept the proposition that much of our expressed con cern about obesity reflects strong social in ejudice against the obese at least as much as it reflects genuine concern for the possible effects of obesity on health Dr Goldbloom said What is the evidence for this socal prejudice It is generally agreed today that the emotional rpoblems ex perienced by obese children like the associated metabolic disturbances are the result rather than the cause of the obesestate The poor sellesteem oi many obese adolescents is well documented and in my opinion is the aspect of the problem most in need of help Dr Gold bloom stated We still have great deal to learn about obesity before we are in position to pronounce convincingly on its causes risks treatment or prevention The relationship of feeding pat terns in early infants to the later development of obesity is unclear and at present it seems approprite to avoid dogma and retain flexible attitude about such questions as when to iii troduce solid foods in the infant diet remembering the con siderable spectrum in in dividual needs and the variation in social cir cumstances that also affect le ree Stalin such decisions Dr Goldbloom recommended significant increase in daily calorie expenditure by all children as means to reduce the prevalence and severity of obesity It would also beiicfil the health of the entire population Clearly such change must occur through the school system If every child in Canada were to spend one hour of school time each day in vigorous organized physical ac tivity it is conceivable that the prevalence of obesity might be lessened to some extent and the general level of health and fit ness would improved CUSTOM MADE DBAPERIES and BEDSPIIEAIIS Total
