Onetime area schqglhouse to fall to wreckers hammer LA STUCCO exterior hid the red brick schoolhouse after Oindles School was closed in By RICHARD DUNSTAN Examiner Staff Reporter Many times during the past 10 years Peter Hodges recalls his work at the Speedy Auto Glass shop at Bayfield and Cundles has been interrupted by elderly visitors who have re quested permission to take look around the premises Theres where used to sit they would say pointing or thats where the old potbellied stove stood For more than 70 years from 1885 or earlier until 1959 the Speedy shop was known as See tin School Number One Vespra and generations of Cundles residents sat through eight grades in what was then red brick schoolhouse Now Speedy Auto Glass has moved to new quarters up the street and the building will be torn down to make room for new branch of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Jurisdictional changes the passage of time and an 1897 fire which destroyed Vespra Townships records have made the schools beginnings difficult to trace but records kept in the Simcoe County Archives show that the school was operating in 1885 when teacher was hired for an annual wage of $300 wage which later dropped to $250 The little red schoolhouse served the communitys children unaided until 1953 when second Cundles School known as 1A was built Cundles joined Barrie at the beginning of 1959 as part of 1200acre annexation and the old schoolhouse was closed the same year Its subsequent history inclues stretch as an auto dealership as well as its time as Speedy shop CHANGES MADE Changes to the building since it closed as school include removal of its bell tower and in stallation of garage door false front and stucco ex terior The changes were not the first in the schools history Glen Brown who attended the school during the depres sion says the building has long been kept from spreading or collapsing by iron braces which LOCAL GENERAL SENIOR TRAVELOGUE The Kiwanis Club of Lorena Streets was 1959 Other changes were removal of the bell tower and installation of the false front were installed to avert condem nation of the building in the days when his grandfather sat on the school board Mr Brown whose father Wallace attended the school in the 18905 was on the scene for another major improvement the installation of indoor toilets Prior to his time there pupils had to use an outhouse next to the schools woodshed but during the 305 facilities were updated to provide chemical units inside the building great help on winter days Mr Brown recalls Heat for the schoolroom came from woodburning stove and Mr Brown remembers how the potbellied burnace would roast you to death if you sat near it but do you little good if you were posi tioned at the opposite end of the room FOND MEMORIES Another Barrie resident with fond memories of the school is Reta Fralick who was stu dent there during the first decade of this century then returned twice as teacher from 1920 to 1923 and again from 1949 to 1952 Mrs Fralick now 76 recalls regarding the schoolhouse as an old school even when she was student there In her day she recalls Candles was little communi ty of itself with not only school but post office cab bler who had collection of ex otic birds and an active com munitylife Later she learned of the dif ficulties of teaching in one room school At one time taught 54 children in eight grades she recalls referring to record student body which jammed the building during her second stretch of teaching This represented an increase from an average of 35 students each year during her first term but disciplining so many children was no problem in those days she recalls Glen Brown does not regret the passing of the old building It should have been torn down years ago
