held its March hike the first one this year that took place under springlike condi tions The wintry conditions of the preivous week had broken tip on Friday and it seemed the first spring migrants were destined to make our list The field trip commenced at Centennial Park in Barrie at 830 am and was the leader Between our homes and the park as well as at Frenchs Marsh behind French Motors people were seeing the typical avian harbingers of spring such as robins crackles redwings killdeers and rusty blackbird The rusty was bit ahead of schedule Crows were also about in good numbers but these have been cawing throughout the coun ty for month or more now Also complimenting our lists were some winter birds that had been visiting feeders In cluded in this list were red polls evening grosbeaks and some goldfinches not yet in their summer plummage Before the five cars that had collected for the field trip had left our meeting spot our list was at 18 species KESTRELST00 We headed west out Hwy something else exotic in the openess there but life there was rather dead We added horned lark to our list and turned south seeing mourning dove as we were pull ing away Soon we ended up at the Tiffin Conservation Area Ja which was busy with tapped trees We looked around there for some birds but it too was rather dead in this respect Turning east again we head ed for the Brentwood area hoping to find flooded field suitable for migrating water fowl On route we saw bunch of snow buntings in field and also saw our first march hawk North Americas only member of the barrier family Flooded roads Contradicted our decision to head into Mines ing Swamp and we made circle and headed back towards Barrie via Hwy 26 and the Minesing Flood Plain By this time it was near noon and cooler temperatures
