Resignations wont hurt housing chairman claims By PETER DEPODESTA Examiner Staff Reporter Losing four more members wont stop the citys housing committee says Helen Corbett chairman Mrs Corbett said the resigna tions of Eileen Carol Marg Duncan Leon Garrick and Bob Crossan do not mean the end of the committee formed January 1975 The remaining members on the committee she said have real keen interest The committee meets Thursday on the second floor at city hall to discuss the resigna tions This is the second time in seven months the committee has had multiple resignations think it will keep going Mrs Corbett said Well end up some day with nucleus of good knowledgable people ex tremely interested in housing in Barrie Mrs Corbett who turned WEA TIER down the chairmanship in September after former chair man Paul Arbour resigned said she would have more in formation after the meeting Thursday Weve ironed out lot of the links she said But were still at point of trying to find out what the public needs and can afford in housing The committees support pushed through development on smaller lots as method of lowering housing costs and the idea of no rill housing nofrill house is built without unnecessary extras such as carpeting fireplaces extra bathrooms or hardwood floors Two major projects which the committee is developing in clude housing study in the ci ty which should be completed this week and cooperative housing project on cityowned land on Little Avenue Its matter of educating the public to buy what they can afford to buy she said Mrs Corbett said she has considered resigning from the committee because of her ac tivities with the Parents without Partners association but does not want the publicity She said the committee decreased the number of meetings to one month to keep members interest high The committee was formed in January 1975 after recom mendation by the city develop ment committee The members were asked to serve without pay In September two members Paul Arbour and Ed Jennings resigned indicating frustration between the housing committee and elected officials of council Additional members were ap pointed including Don Rug gles Lines Ltd in Barrie before council expropriated the companys property in 1971 The city and Mr Arbuthnot fought long court battle over the citys settlement for the land at the foot of Bayfield Street septic problem HAWKSTONE Until Satur day 74yearold woman here was near her wits end The septic tank of Martha Roes neighbor Bruce Cup page had overflowed and flooded her basement Hawkestone is about 10 miles northeast of Barrie in Cm township Theyre getting away with it because Im woman an old woman Mrs Roe told The Ex aminer man would kill them He wouldnt put up with this nonsense she said The situation had calmed by Saturday however She said the water was no longer being diverted through her backyard Mr Cuppage said Friday he would direct the water into roadside ditch as soon as it was clear of ice The septic tank overflows he said because it is sitting on hardpan or slatelike earth So Mr Cuppage is not happy with Simcoe County Health Unit regulations that required him to install tank in 1974 An outhouse previously serv ed the sixmember Cuppage family The location pf the 400foot tile bed intended to filter waste water was approved by the health unit To handle the overflow this year Mr Cuppage had to buy sump pump He directed the clear filtered water from his basement through his sideyard and onto Mrs Roes property Her basement subsequently became flooded and she bought sump pump to remove the water and direct it onto the yard of neighbor Lloyd Lees Mrs Roe feels it isnt fair that she had to buy pump but Mr Cuppage said there isnt snowballs chance in hell that he will
