mile each day about five days week Several times while swimming my legs and arms start to burn stop and float for few min utes then resume swimming when the pain stops Are exercise and swimming harmful for people with neur itis Is this burning and pain making scars on my nerves EK Congratulations on your regular exercise program Too many persons with arthirtis give up on exercise am taking your neuritis with grain of salt Since you get relief by floating resing your legs suspect your dis comfort is related to tight ening of the fascia The fascia is fibrous covering around the muscles As the muscle fibers enlarge with exercise brun ing sensation results have had this myself No harm re sults There is no specific treat ment if this is your case Possibly one or two aspirin or other painrelieving tablets an hour before you plunge would help forestall discomfort Dear Dr Thostcson Could you tell me if its normal for 16monthold child to have hali Iosis Our daughter seems to have developed it quite badly over the last couple of months We brush her teeth once or twice daily If it bears any rela tion to the subject she also has fairly soft stools Please let me know if concern is in order Mrs 0H Ordinarily disorders of the stomach or bowel are not sig nificant factors in mouth odor Halitosis is rather vague term In youngsters infected tonsils or adenoids or nasal disorder are more common fac tors Milk can be cause and can also be involved in the loose stool if there is an intolerance toit The matter should be brought to the attention of your doctor He may not find anything un usual in the odor you detect You should make sure the youngster is not getting inti some substance around the house that could be causing such an odor Dear Dr Thostcson What is aflotoxin Why is it put into peanut butter thought the la bels of foods were supposed to show what ingredients chem icals or additives were added Please comment Mrs Aflotoxin is not added It is substance produced by mold that affects peanuts that are old and stored in moist place Its exact effect in humans is not established It does not occur in freshlyharvested peanuts nor in those intact in the shell The federal Food and Drug Administration according to the last reference have allows tolerance of 20 parts per mil lion in finished peanut prod uct as peanut butter The sub stance will appear in other nuts old seeds and cereal grains stored under improper conditions The American Medical Asso ciation states that the amount of aflotoxin obtained in most peanut butters is so in consequential that it is not con sidered harmful Dear Dr Thostcson How should toenails be cut square across or rounded following the outline of the toe Ive heard both ways upheld with equal vehemence JB Straight across Its no bur ning medical controversy but it can be mighty important if one is prone to development of ingrown nails The nails can grow out unevenly especially in wearing tight shoes The rounded portion adjacent to the skin can then burrow into the tissue Straightacross wins the day with no argument Astro Graph Bernice Bede Ocol For Tuesday March 30 1976 ARIES March 21April 19 New projects should not be simple bleach By Polly ramer Pollys Problem DEAR POLLY After many years of doing laundry still have problem with removing stains from white socks without wearing myself out with rubbing have never found satisfactory solution for these stubborn stains caused by men who insist on wearing white socks with work shoes Any idea would be appreciated VELMA DEAR VELMA If the heavy socks are worn with work shoes they are doubtless heavy cotton ones so do not see why the stains cannot be removed with bleach or one of those spray on products for spots and stains My boys wore such socks for sports and even though the stained sections were not always perfectly white after using bleach they were at least so pale that one knew they were clean had no complaints POLLY DEAR POLLY My solution for removing grease blood or any hard to remove stains from clothes is to put the article in warm water with cup of vinegar Let soak few hours or overnight and then wash as usual with detergent This has saved me money since have washed out stains so bad thought the clothes would have to be thrown away MRS BL DEAR POLLY My Pet Pecvc is with the way clothing is labeled here in the 18 When in England was impressed with their more informative way Sizes were marked so much clearer They gave not only the size but the bust and hip measurements and whether or not the garment was for short or tall figure All this was on the tag with the cleaning instruc tions ESJ DEAR POLLY The pads for my dining room table were badly soiled and impossible to clean so purchased adhesive backed paper with white background and small gold dots all over it never select too bold or colorful design as it will show through the tablecloth The pads were measured the paper cut to fit and then applied to the pads The pad that fits the leaf for extending the tables length was also covcrcd and now they all look like new MRS JTQ DEAR POLLY tried everything could think of to clcan my hands after refinished some furniture but nothing work ed and some things were very hard on my skin friend suggested the following which worked just fine Bcforc putting any water on your hands pour on some cooking oil and rub it in good Then apply dishwashing soap and rub and then pour on water and the stain will come off have not tried this with paint or varnish but guarantee it works with stain SHARON DEAR POLLY Dusting my large book collection always seemed such chore until started keeping clean soft paint brush handy This makes it possible to clean the edges of the pages faster and more thoroughly Any small size soft brush will do MRS WR WIN AT BRIDGE No honor in Harolds play Dogs NORTH 29 A73 VAB QKQJ652 fiJ109 WEST AKJ64 9173 08 475432 SOUTH AA10852 VKQ6 99743 Both vulnerable EAST s99 V108542 A10 QKQ86 West
