TORONTO CP Sidney Handleman Ontario minister of consumer and commercial relations said Sunday an ad ditional 20 rentreview officers will be hired to help clear backlog of rentreview ap plications estimated at 245000 At the present rate of appli cations it would take six mon ths to clear the backlog he said The minister said the esti mate of 245000 is inflated be cause many applications are duplicates In some cases ten ants file applications although their landlords already have submitted applications he said Provincial legislation recen tly passed limits rent increases to eight per cent unless lan dlord can justify higher raise to rentreview officers William Robbins executive director of the rentreview pro gram earlier had said he was worried that the provinces 70 rentreview officers would be hit with another surge of appli cations within the next two months POSITIONS NOT FILLED Mr Handleman said he had talked to Mr Robbins and given him the authority to recruit new officers Five of the officers probably will be in positions not filled previously because the government found no qualified persons the minister said He said Ottawa Kitchener and London have the biggest backlog of applications perhaps because there are universities in the three com munities and rentreview ap plications involving student housing have flooded the of fices The number of applications probably has doubled because of an amendment to the provin cial legislation to bring student and limiteddividend housing morning houses and housing with rent geared to come under the controls he said
