Thursday eveing Vi The Merry Widow Campbell was commentator for the evening and after the show was over coffee and doughnuts were served Examiner Photo light sparkling By MURIEI LEEPER Thursday night was Opening Night for surprisingly light and sparkling version of Franz Lehars The Merry Widow The musical at Georgian College Theatre is from the new book and lyrics by Charles George an Americanized somewhat modernized arrangement of the operetta The production is presented by the Georgian College Music Theatre and therefore the singers actors and technicians were all part of course being offered by instructor Wendy Hicks Spontaneous applause after applause plenty of laughter and excitement from the audience good movement and style from the cast it all added up to quite triumph for direc tor producer Wendy Hicks Charles George somehow managed to keep the essence of the Lehar production even though the action takes place in smart seaside resort hotel in America Prince Nikalas is there from an obscure kingdom of Europe Princess Stephanie is there betrothed at an early age to the Prince and even the famous Maxims of Paris is there by inviting four cancan girls from the worldrenowned restaurant It was good fun enjoyed perhaps by those onstage as much as the audience Luckily the widow Joan Megraw has lovely voice and very secure pitch She has many songs to sing and many of them have been favorites sin ce the first performance of The Merry Widow in 1905 Not only does Joan Megraw sing beautifully she also looks the part She is petite and animated and moves naturally but with flair With such star in the title role the show took off and carried all the players to delightful ending with some fine highlights throughout The mens chorus line was real showstopper Singing Ladies and giving their in terpretation of ballet they brought down the house Connie Hodges was an instant success as Beatrice Whittaker newspaper columnist Her Lovelorn Column versus her Gossip Column was perfectly epitomized in Thats My Line She created one of the high points of the show Marilyn Campbell was splendid Sarah van Orden society matron with Eleanor Presley and Jan Burgess as believable support actresses Vocally none of the other performers came up to the standards set by Joan Megraw However Rob Townsend was competent Prince Nikalas who always produced pleasant enough effect putting his songs across strongly and with ex cellent pitch GREATSTYLE Townsend moved well on stage overemphasizing his part at first but towards the end of the production acting with great style The Princes secretary com panion was perhaps one of the most believable in the produc tion Don Carter looked the part and acted with the reser ve and imperiousness for which the role cried out He helped immensely to establish the small kingdom as fact Then there were the Prestons the young pretty wife and the older husband with an eye for the girls Rochelle Boland looked charming and became increasingly confident as the evening progressed gradually reducing her initial exaggerations Geoff Reid favorite actor around town was absolutely marvellous as the elderly playboy He entered straight in to his role and became partly responsible for keeping the pace of the show and creating some of the highlights The four girls from Maxims were big plus They looked just right and their flirtatious French mannerisms and ac cents brought bright vivaciousness to the produc tion Both the ladies and gen tlemen of the chorus moved with confidence and good deal of naturalness and retained groupings that never cluttered thestage With the added feature of splendid musical ac companiment Elizabeth Farrar piano Norman Abbott cello Cyril Leeper violin and Bob Glover Percussion the show was great success
