IOThe Barrie Examiner Friday March 26 1976 SPORTS WHEEL for cyclists By ED HARPER Chay Each day see more and more bicycles around the Canadian crew Win in sailing ST PETERSBURG Fla CP Hans Fogh of Toronto with crewmember Evert Bastet of Montreal won the flying Dut chman class Thursday in the final day of racing at the St Petersburg Olympic Regatta training session Harry Jemmett of Kingston with 93 points In the Tornado class Larry Woods of Winona 0nt with crewmate Michael de la Roche of Kingston finished fifth over all with 10th place finish Thursday and 54 points They finished third in the fi nal race of the event and ac cumulated only 224 penalty points for the win Second was Dennis Clark of Auburn Wash streets That is sure sign that spring is here Although havent been out on my own bicycle as yet believing that the weather should be little warmer especially for me can har dly wait For several years now have been President of the Barrie 80 victory for Kinsmen Division of the Berolina Cycling Club This club has its with 244penalty points headquarters in Toronto and is sponsored by the Berolina Two other Canadians finished ii Bakeries there It is one of the leading cycling clubs in Canada in the top 10 Barrie Kinsmen major atoms scored an 80 win over Thornhill in the fifth game of the Bramp ton tournament this week but this was not enough in the Round Robinstyle playoff as Woodstock Richmond Hill or Milton will go on to the semi Roger Green of Hawkestone Ont finished eighth overall with 747 penalty points and Robert Lewis of Vancouver who won Thursdays final race finished 10th overall with 930 points and we in Barrie who have raced under their colors were for tunate for we were not charged for our membership the last couple of years But now we believe that it is time for the bicycle riders of Simcoe County to have their own bicycle club friend of mine from Painswick by the name of Jerry Breiding has been working hard in order to organize club for this area He has wmm the colors picked out and everything is ready to roll We need bicycle riders of all ages so if you are interested please get in touch with me My phone number is 4361951 We would like to set up meeting as soon as possible Bicycle racing is great sport It is not only healthy it is thrilling sport There are many different forms of bicycle racing For instance there are sprint riders pursuit riders road riders track riders motor pace riders etc So there are races for every type of racer Until coach has worked with the rider for few months he has no idea just what kind of rider the subject may turn into OUTSTANDING Some riders are outstanding at all types of racing from sprin ts to long distances and on road or track different type of bicycle is used for track racing than is used for road racing The forks on track bicycle are straighter and the wheelbase shor ter and fixed wheel is used for track That means that the pedals turn when the bicycle is moved and rider cannot coast he must pedal at all times And of course there are no brakes on track bike To start bicycle riding with the idea of maybe becoming racer the rider doesnt need the best of equipment If you have tenspeed road bicycle that is all you need at the start It is surprising how quickly you can learn about the bicycle racing game and how fast you can develop into good rider if you have the ability No one knows if they have the ability until they give it try The leading bicycle riders of the world are all rich men Eddy Merckx of Belgium is the highestpaid athlete in the world SO if rider can become good enough to turn professional some time during his career lot of money can be made Getting back to the new club that we are trying to form it has already been registered with the Ontario Cycling Association and the Canadian Cycling Association The name that has been chosen for the club is the Huronia 76 The colors are green with white and yellow band around the chest and sleeves We hope to get sponsor for our new club as soon as possible All we need are more riders so why not give it try You will have fun and am sure that you will enjoy it Seminar will present lessons on sailing The Ontario Sailing Association in cooperation throughout the Georgian Bay Region THEY WON PICTON TOURNAMENT HONORS Shown here are the Oro Jets grls hockey team which won the division section of the
