IOThe Barrie Examiner Thursday March 25 I976 The acrobatics of Napanee goaltender Steve Rexe help to earn him berth on the Ontario Hockey Association Senior first allstar team Rexe in his challenging man ner of netmindingcollected 22 points in voting by the coaches of the seven team league five more than John Adams of Thunder Bay Rexe will face his toughest confrontation of the season tonight when the Comets step onto the ice to meet Barrie Flyers in crucial game at the Barrie Arena Comets have been dragging their tail so far in the series Something that has to stop if they want to prevent elimination in four straight games Barrie already holds 20 lead in the best of seven quarter finals following surprisingly easy win in Napanee last Sun day Comets seem to have slipped from an aggressive role into one of trying to outskate Barrie For team which led the league in penalty minutes BRIBERY FOR An article appearing in the Globe and Mail earlier this week came close to shaking the foundations of minor hockey by revealing in copyright story that boys as young as years have been offered signing bonuses of skates and three speed bicycles if they agree to play hockey for specific minor hockey team clear cut case of adults taking the game from the youngsters for the glory and publicity of winning Its bad example for the youngsters who start early to link winning with material gain If there is anything which will crucify the ambition of minor hockey its this drive to win We have teams in the Barrie Minor Hockey Association with records unequalled in minor hockey play Its big deal for the players and coach to boast of perfect season record zone cham pionship tournament win some title here another there They call it bringing glory to the city Which they do of cour se You cant take that away from them Barrie is known for its hockey clubs at the minor level We rejoice when the efforts of team its players and coaches are rewarded by cham pionship But what of the losing team What happens to it Hopefully BARRIE RACEWAY RESULTS Wednesday March 24 1976 lst Cdm Trot MJL $450 GlerrmouniRebel Ada CCuny 70 90 Arden un 90 TIME lb EXACIOP and paid 554 50 7ri1 Corid CORNER Flyers looking for fast series Randy McDonald inc first two games of the seiics have been on the meek side One has the feeling of pent up volcano about to explode With the exception of the goaltending department Flyers ranked high in the voting for all allstar spots setback was the passing over of Flyers Ron Patterson who won the goaltending award and Grant Cole Flyers placed five on the first team and three on the second team Darryl Sly made the first all star team in duo role As defenccman and as playing coach So far the experience of Sly has surpassed that of Comets Walter Gerow who was selected as coach of the second allstarteam Comets cannot attord toss tonight Going back to Napaiiee trailing 30 with the possibility of having the series end on your own home ice is tough mouth ful to swallow win in either tonights game or Saturday in Napanee would force fifth match back in Barrie Sunday OUNG HOCKEY the last memory of the season is not one of another team skating around the ice holding up trophy or the ringing of cheers in their ears for the other team As often as not it seems the efforts of an entire season are lost in the crushing blow of defeat so close to the end All the glories excitement mguish and triumphs of the season fade watching the other team celebrate Values are taught early If we teach young hockey player that the most important thing of the game is to winthen thats exactly what hell remember if bribery is needed to quarantee the win for some slob willing to sacrifice the ethics of team full of young players then who is to blame when league falls apart or the pressure to win becomes so great as to force players into acting in manner deviant to their normal behavior As it stands there is no clear cut rule preventing clubs from enticing players to compete with certain club The teams of the Toronto league guilty of such abuse must be stopped Players at such young age should get nothing at all for playing the game except the satisfaction of doing so The whole purpose of minor hockey especially at the tender ages mentioned is to have fun while learning the basics of the game HIROYM HOURS TEAMMATES7N1RAIILAIE SW GOALIE TOM
