he in srsts Orillia has been superior in curling and lacrosse Himself native of Collingo wood Girard pointed out with measure of pride that the Ship building town has won more OHA championships than any other place in the county He al so conceded Barrie has an edge in dominating the senior hock ey series in recent years But Orillia has them all beat when it comes to lacrosse championships and think we are better at curling too said Girard during an interview ar ranged to boost the coming 0r illia 32nd annual spring bonsp iel Stan Sarjeant skipped the first two winners in 1945 and 46 but COUNTY HOCKEY RECORDS Barrie Flyers fine achieve ments of recent years highlighted by the Allan cup champions of 1974 has occupied the main coun ty hockey limelight Currently the Flyers are defending senior OHA champions and rate as fav orites to repeat Orillia Terriers beat out St Boniface in the finals for the Allan cup in 1973 and have made strong bids on other occasions but havent been able to match Bar ries hockey record Barrie Fly ers beat out Cranbrook in the 19174 finals There have been more major league hockey players developed in Barrie than Orillia with Hap Emms Paul Meger Jack Dyte Jerry Toppazzini and Real Chevrefils among the more illus trious Barries 1948 Memorial cup fin alists and the 1935 junior OHA winners are among past champ ionship teams with glowing re cords Before the Terriers of re cent years Orillia had to go back to 1915 for its last OHA the intermediate title Orillia al so captured the 191314 junior provincial honors When it comes to OHA titles of the past Scotty Carmichael cou 1d present good case to show Collingwood was Simcoe Coun tys leading hockey centre in sofar as winning championships and producing standout players are concerned Collingwood won some 12 OHA champions along with numerous other honors including the 1966 Central Ontario senior laurels Reeve Don Spooner who was harddriving forward with C01 lingwoods intermediate cham pions of 194950 has referred to such former NHL stars as Jack Portland Jim lSailor1 Herberts Bernie Brophy and Reg Noble In discussing Coilingwood hock ey greats Portland was coach of the Shipbuilders when Don first broke into OHA ranks with the Collingwood juniors back about 193940 Currently Eddie Bush who co ached Collingwoods 1550 inter mediate OHA champions has been receiving much praise for his astute handling of the im proved Kansas Citv Scouts des pite franchise troubles Older hockey fans generally rate Leighton Haipt Emms as Barries greatest hockey player He had same 17 years in the NHL But there were many oth er outstanding pro hockeyists from Barrie including such one time sparkling stars as Megcr Toppazzini Chevrefils and Dyte already mentioned along with Ron Stewart Doug Mohns Leo
