earcam nxasunun yawn nun Bicycle willhel Chay As most people who read my column know am very interested in bicycle ran ing having been sixday bi cycle racer away back in the 19305 Each spring when the sun shines start to feel young and try to find challenge for my self and my bike few years ago challenged friend of mine to bicycle race at Bar rie Speedway We rode three quartermile heats He won two of the heals and won one He had been riding regularly in races for veterans and was in much better condition than So did well to win even one of the heats Last year rode few legs of the Preo bicycle tour which was warmup to the Cycle Canada 76 Tour which will take place this year The furthest that rode last year in any one day was about 50 miles left the provincial park at Fitzroy Harbour at 930 am and arrived at the Ottawa Bahi bition at noon wasnt tired and this has had me wondering how many miles could ride in eight hours So this coming June will ind out for am going to attempt an eighthour ride at one of the malls in Barrie This bicycle ride will be pro ject of mine to raise money for the Optimist Club ln turn the Optimist Club has pledged to help financially the Barrie Minor Soccer League the Hur onia Striders Track and Field Club and several other youth groups The members of the Barrie Optimist Club will be asking you the people of the Barrie area for pledges per mile that ride Each person giving pledge will have guess on how many miles will ride during the 137 THE SPORTS WHEEL ride proiecl out groups by ED HARPER eight hours There will be one large cash prize for the person who guesses closest to the total number of miles The speedomet er of my bicycle will be sealed by city celebrity at the start and eight hours later will be unsealed by the same person It should be very interesting will be allowed to stop and rest if have to We will call this project0p timist Eds Marathon Bicycle Ride for Youth and we hope that everyone in Barrie will support this project The money le be used mostly for the Barrie Minor Soccer League which has more than 800 boys and girls playing soccer Please give me lots of en couragement by making your pledge when an Optintist or friend calls on you The train ing for ride such as this will be as hard as the ride itself but each mile that ride during the eight hours will be for the youth of the area and what bet ter reason could have to try this crazy ride to nowhere The final date and place has not been set as yet but we Will be notifying the public in the next week or two and we Will also be distributing
