TRAN Almost unnoticed in the uproar over the govern- ment's roll back on old age pensions, the first annual report was tabled from the Security Intelligence Review Committee. This is the body that arase from the stor- my creation of the Canadian Security Intelligence Serv- ice. This is the, body which is to monitor the activities of what the media insisted on calling our spy agency. This is the body which is supposed to act as the pub- ic's watchdog, ta be sure that our security and intelli- gence service is acting professionally and efficiently, ta be sure that it is obeying the law of the land, and ta be sure that it is respecting the civil rights of Cana-, dian citizens. In short, the Security Intelligence Review Committee is the body that is supposed ta set the minds at rest of cold warriors, the legal fraternity and civil libertarians alike. But recently, in its first annual report, about the anly camfart it had ta offer was in its composition. Al three major parties are represented, and ail of its members are privy councîllors. The problem, of course, is in the very nature of the business they are overseeing. They can tell us that aur security and intelligence agents are continuing ta engage in intrusive activities - bugging, wire-tapping, letter-opening. They can assure us that those activities have 'béen carried out in accordance with the law, that is, with a Judge's warrant. A committee member, Frank McGee, assured us that he and his colleagues examined ail those warrants and that they were in unanimous agree- ment that each one was necessary. 1 Reporters were told by the chairman, Ron Atkey, that in the commttee's estimation, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service did everything possible ta prevent the tragedy at the Turkish embassy. But it cannot begin ta answer the questions that statement begs. If the CSIS did its job, what persans or agencies didn't? Did the RCMP fail down on the job?' Did the Solicitor General's department or ExternaPAf- fairs? Or was it the Turkish Embassy?- The committee couldn't say anything which might give aid and comfort to the country's enemies. I can understand the caution. They're balzing a new trani ev- ery inch of the way. But one hopes that by the next annual report a year from naw, they'll realize that giving some degree of aid and comfort ta the country's enemies is a price, that for the sake of democracy, pretty welI has ta be paid. lifford Swallow gives wvith ber bot dog at the operative Customner Ap- é,Merle, a belpiing hand Durham Farmer's Co- preciation Day last Thursday (SPOTS J Sînce our last report the team bas won tbree and lost two to end the season witb a winning record of seven vic- tories, four losses and two ties. Steven Sargent played a great game in goal, often diving at the opposîng forwards' feet to block shots. The final league gante saw us win 2-0 agaînst the Wolves from Bowmanville. Jamie Shetier and Scott Bordun scored the goals wbile Jason Lawrence stopped themn at the other end. Ail season long the teamt bas improved; Steven and Jason played well in goal; Scott Ransberry and Ryan Regimbai steadied a defen- sive corps that included Krista Szymczak, Jason Hill, Brett Graves and Scott McDonald. The midfielders, led by Andrew Burton, pro- vided lots of scoring chances to the forwards; midfielders were Ailan McKenzie, Stephan Canceiliere, Jason Stubbs, Lindsey Couch and Jarrod Easton.
