Propose Communal> System for Newton ville (Confinued fromt page 1) Regional staff have suggested that fronfage and connelctiori charges would raise $470,000 fron Newtonville propert y owners under a communal systemi. If a 60 percent grant isyaailable fromt the province it would mean an additional $851,000 on the total project cost including fire protection falilities in an amounIt Of $1.419 million. This however st iii leaves a short fail of ap- Proxtrnately $100,000.00 for the Region of Durham who do have the responsibility for the SUPPly and distribution of .Municipal water supply. The Regional charges for a commiunial water sysfem fon residents in the area under t he current rates would be $26.07 a foot as a front age charge plus a connection charge of $1,250.00. Both these amnounit could be paid in a Ilump sum1 or financed ecr a period of' twenfy years to the property owners. Residents would still pay a user fee such as in aIl areas serviced by water an d which on average cost around $93.5 '2 annually. The staff report does point ouf that there wýould likely be sorne st rong opposition to the communal systemn.
