4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, Januatry 18, 1984 v SPOb 0-iRTSk r .Tennant Fuelers lose tournie then win three, two shut-outs On SatLrday Omemee came to town and handed the Fuelers a 2-0 defeat. This was Orono's first game after the Xmas holidays and the boys were a little rusty. Thcy lack- ed their usual zip and ailow- cd Omemee ta score unmnswered goals in the Ist aud 2nd periods. The Fuelers did have seime scoring chances but were unable to cash in. We will get themn nxt time. TOURNA-MENT On Sunday the boys *ravelied to Weffington ta participate i their tourna- ment. The team played well but stili lacked their scoring punch. However, consideriug they were serre players short, due te the flu, they Put up a good figlt andriost out lu the consolation final. The Fuelers played Kigston in thir lst match aud came up short by a 3-2 margin. Kington wet ahead by a 3-0 deficit and it was midway into the 2nd period before the Fuelers counted one of their own. Kevin Roberts was the marksmnau when lie reccived a nice pass from Jim Partuer and Brent Gates. At the 6:lO0mark ofthe 3rd period Kevin again scored after Jason Major put him in- to the cdent. The Fuelers kept pressing but were unable to tic the match aud force overtimie. 2ND GAME Belevile aud Orono then squared off in what proved to be a highly spirited match. This time Orono came out on top by a 3-2 counit. Dustin Reid drew first blood just 38 seconds into the gaine when he cashcd in on Kevin Roberts rebound. Belleville camne back with 2 unanswcred goýals to p ahead 2-1. However, Kevin Roberts tied the match when he blastcd home Camneron Esler's stup. Jason Major started the play when lie broke up a rush at the blueline. There was no scoring in the second frame as both teams battled it out. At the 5:35 mark of the lat period Dustin Re-id bagged the winner with Jason Braclivogel and Jason Major doing the spade work to earn the assists. Bradley Minnis, Brent Gates and Craig Nemnis played strong defeusive games to help the cause. FINAL GAME The consolation final pit- ted a tough Picton teain against our shorthanded Fuelers. Orono was in the game ail the way but great goaltending and fatigue final- ly beat them. The Fuelers domninated the early part of the lst period with Kevin Roberts opening the game ".*th a hard shot that fooled the Picton net- minder. Dustin Reid's forechccking made the goal possible. Orono playcd their hearts out but were unable to beat the Picton goalie again. Picton scored unanswered goals in ail 3 periods to win the consolation champion- ship 3-1. The boys played strong hockey ail day and although shorthanded and vcry tired, they gave it their bcst shot. Shawn Hardy played ex- cellent btween the pipes to kcep the Fuelers in the games. ORONO 5 - MANVERS O With a full squad back the Fuelers defeated an improved Manver's team in a regular league game on Saturday night. There was no scoring in the lst period with the Fuelers outplayirig their opponents but unable to beat a sharp Manver's goalie. Early into the 2nd period David Sheridan took a beautiful pais from Dustin Reid and sunk a low, hard shot between the goalie's legs. Jim Partuer startcd the play by headmanning the puck to Dusty. Towards the end of the second period the Fuelers seemed to sag and Shawn Hardy had to corne up with somte big saves to help lis teain in the gamne. Hlowever in the 3rd period Orono caught fire and really turned on the jets. Kevin Roberts managed a clear cut breakaway when Bradley Minnis headmanned a perfect pass to him. Kevin made no mistakes picking the lowver right hand corner to put the home tcam ahead 2-0. Just 22 seconds later David Sheidan scored his second goal of the game when Scott McAllister and Camneron Esler combined with some slick passing to put David into 'the clear. Dave drilicd a hard, low shot bet- ween the Manvers goalie's legs. Score 3-0 Orono. Camnron Esler got one of is own when he unleashed a high shot from thc side of the net which handcuffed the visitors goalie. Jason Major Hamilton Insurance Midgets runners up in consolation -series On December 27th, the Hamilton's Insurance Midgets ventured north to Woodville for a one-day tournament. There they end- ed up runners-up in the Con- solation. In the first gamne they faced-off against an Oshawa Midget team. Within five minutes of the first period Orono was found short- handed, with an interference penalty, which gave Oshawa time to put theinselves on the scoreboard. With Oshawa leading 1 -O going in to second period, Orono came out try- ing, unsuccessfully, to even the score but at the same time kept Oshawa offense down to no goals as well. During the third period each team was found short-handed on three different occasions. Unfor- tunately, due to one of Orono's needless penalties Oshawa took a 2-0 lead and won the game, In their second game of the day, Orono played with a winning style against the Thornton Midgets. The final Score was 4-3 in Oronio's favour. Orono's deflense and offense responded with a much improved effort, as started thc play witli sorti heads up forechecking. .Jeff Hartwig who is forever plugging away, final- ly broke bis scoring slump and put the Fuelers ahead "-. Jeff was dumpcd by a defenseman but rcfuscd to give up and slammcd the puck into the net while lic was fiat out on his stomach. Dustin Reid and Kevin Roberts set the play up. Scott McAllister and Jim Partner playcd strong gaines. Shawn Hardy earnedi the shutout. ORONO 4 - DOW. SELECTS 0 The Fuelers travelled to Darlington to take on the Select teain from Bowman- ville and skated away with a 4-0 win. This exhibition match was wel-playcd and cxciting to watch. Both squads were ini high geai with Orono opening the lst period with Bradley Min- nis firing a hard shot from the point which foolcd the Bowmanville goalie. Jeff Hartwig and Kevin Roy earn- cd assists on the goal. Late into the second period Jeif Hartwig found the mark when hie fired a low, hard shot to the glove side to put the Fuelers aliead by a 2-0 couint. Jason Brachvogel did the spadework on this goal. The 3rd period was 2'/z minutes old when Kevin Roy banged homne Jeff Hartwig's rebound after Jason Brachvogel dug the puck out of the corner. Caineron Esler put Orono ahcad for good when hie flipped a nice backhander into the top right hand corner. Scott McAllister, David Sheridan and Scott Williamis played strong 2-way gaines to end the cause. Shawn Hardy earned his second shutout in a row. OSHAWA LITTLE NHL BRUINS 2 - ORONO 1 The Fuelers took on the Little NHL Bruins Major, Atom teain of Oshawa and were just nipped by a 2-1 count. This was a fast paced gaine by 2 evenly mnatched teanis. Kevin Roy drew first blood when he beat the Bruins goalie with a low wrist shot after Kevin R~oberts set him up i the 2nd period. The Bruins fought back with 2 third period goals to go ahead 2-1.ý The Fuclers did tic the match but the goal was disallowed. for the first gamne of the season and skatcd away with a 7-0 victory. The boys were fiying and, althoughi the score doesn't suggest it, Brad Failis in the Millbrook goals playotl extremely well and kept the score down. Mike Landers openied up the scoring after some neat stick-handling, assisted by Andrew Burton and Drew Hansen. Next, Michael Dresliniski popped the first of two, assisted by Greg Knox and Jamnie Shetler. ln the lait minute of the peri.od, Daryl Reid continued his scoring streak a la Gretzky. He was set up by some nifty passes The second period was even in the play but Orono outscored Millbrook 2-O. Michael Dresllnski got his se- cond aided by Mark Foster and Brandon Meadows. Jsuiie Shetler started the fifth goal as he fed Drew whose shot was stopped by the Millbrook goalie and there was Henry Kaldeway to pot the rebound. Henry finished the game off by scoring- two in the final period; the first assisted by Jason Hill and Brandon Meadows, the second bvy Michael Landers and Greg Knox. work and congratulations to Mark Sargent for the shutout. On Friday nighit the two Tyke teams played each other again and the boys were pleased to tic Tykes 1, especiaily coming back frorn a 2-O deficit. Henry Kaldeway was the scoring hero potting both goals, assisted by Mike Landers, Brandon Meadows, Mark Foster and Jason Hill. Again, hitle Mark played standout goalteriding! Next league game is Satur- day, January 21st, at Newcastle Arena. Orono Tyke Il take win over Newcastle, 6-2 score Brian Good openecd the scor- ing at 6:51 with a pretty goal, unassisted. TIen at 1:23 of the first period we saw Aaron Staples, assisted by "Ralph", alias Brisu Haines take the lead 2-0 for the home team. On a pass froin Brian Good to Jeff Hughes, Ben Deremo fired in the third goal of the game at 12:31 of the se- cond period. In the same shift Bria Good, assisted by "J.,Jamie Osmond in- creased the lesd once agaîn. At 4:51 a pass by Brian Good to Paul Woods saw Paul deek the goalie with a fake shot and put it in the opposite cor- ner. The third period saw Newcastle's Chad Petherick score 2 in a row to tighten the score. Brian Good assisted by Aaron Staples closed out tlie scoring giving Orono a 6-2 victory. This is the 8th game this year that Brian Good has had at least a hat-trick. Some mention must bc made about the super gamne iCitd Iaartense played, dig- ging sud scrapig ail the time, but mother luck wai flot with hi only that big bad goal post. Keep tryinig boys, you put in a good effort, worked hiard to keep the other team froin scoring but they just con- nected and we didn't. Our game at Ops on Sun- day the lSth left us with another defeat, but this time the boys put in one heck of an effort. The score at the finish was 4-3 for Ops but we nearly had them. AIl parents there agreed that this was thetir best game so far. At the end of tIe first period the score was O-O. We really had several attempts to get the pudci in but the whistles sud the goal posts were in the way. In the se- cond period Ops put away 2 goals against Chris Yeo, our goalie, but the fellai didn't give up and kept fighting. At the end of the second period the sccýe -was Ops 2, Oroao O. What an exciting game! It kept fans on their feet. S(Continued page 5) compared to their first gaine, from start to finish. Orono found themselves with six penalties in the first period. Thornton took advantage of these penalties putting themselves ahead 2-0. Orono responded, when Thornton was dlown a man, three minutes into the second period. Defenseman Todd Mercer put a blistering slap- shot past Thornton's goalie with an assist going to David LaFrance. That was just enough to get Orono fired up and in less than two minutes Stephen Murree, assisted by Guy Brachvogel, slipped one in to tie the score. The third period showed the fans sorte good end-to-end hockey for the first six minutes of play. Brachvogel scored a well- earned go-ahead goal with an assist from Stephen Murree. Again Orono found out that needless penalties are a waste of aIl their hard work when they were found short- handed with 2:24 left in the gamne. Thor-nton's Allant Brett slipped by to score ant unassisted goal which tied the gamre. Orono still didni't give up, though. With just 26 seconds left in the game Guy Brachvogel pegged in his tbtd point andwiiing goa of the game with the assist going to Keith Vey. Orono met Peterborough in their third and final gamne for the Consolation. Both teains played a tight-checking first period and found themselves tied 1-1 going into the second. Orono showed some good passing ability with Guy Brachvogel and Stephen Murree assisting Paul Henry for their first goal of the game. Peter- borough went ahead two goals in the second period but Murree potted the next goal for Orono assisted by Brachvogel and David Little. Peterborough then scored a breakaway goal putting them ahead by two goals going into the third period. Though Orono played good defense and offense, Peterborough scored another goal winning the game 5-2. Congratulations boys, not only for your efforts on the ice, but also for your good manners and gentleman-like behaviour throughout the day and especially while the awards. were being handed out. You should be as proud as your fans are. Again, con- gratulations!
