2-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, June 28th, 1978 Orono Weekly Times ITS A WONDERFUL WORLD The world about us last- week just seemed to be alive with life and action-Perhaps it was the last big swing before summer really setties in and one is supposed to relax in the L direct rays of the sun as well as bathing in the waters of the clear lakes of the country. 0f course it was the end of the school year and students ' seerned to be vibrant and excited about their graduations. No doubt they were also looking for the summer recess as well as new ventures facing them corne September. The swing of youth was certainly in the air. But flot to be outdone were the aduits who in this area were pursuing their favourite pastimes and this became so evident in the region of Durham. The car rally, the air show, the ham radio operators and the star gazers ail packing their particular activities into the period of a short weekend. Again ~ ~ it is possible the it was also the last swing before summer. But there'ws uch more than it just being a swing. The youth and the aduits were totally wrapped up in the activities and most of ail greatly enjoying the outings. 1Its a Il there ... ail one bas to do is reach out. The planning act was used to increase the lot size as well as the Kindergarten scholars house sîze. By increasing the size of both it was feit that this would provide the restraint necessary. This moved somne to build the larger homes on the l-arger lots who are now facing UOm sizeable tax bills. The planning act was aiso used la the past by for.cing4 larger dwellings to increase assessment on individual homes __ thuis providing more taxation fromn each residential building. The use of the planning act for purpose of restraint is wrong as it is wrong to use the planning act to increase taxation on individual properties., If the municipality does not want rural development they should say so and control development in such areas. If they want greater tax revenue this should be applied across the whole municipality by raising the mîll rate rather than forcing increased assessments by forcing larger homes upon residents.C t does appear that this use has been somewhat Î curtàiled in the past few years but some ten years ago it UeK appeared to be common practice by most municipalities. ~~ ' Wins award of excellence& Neyer a cuter group assem - Todd Gray, Trevor Veitcýh, Jenkins, Michael Hinton, Garrison, Ana Woods, Debbie bled to receive their diplomnas Brian Mereweather, Carlene Shannon Longboat, Karen Hallowell, Patti Reid. than those kindergarten stu- dents al decked out with motarboards at Kirby- Kendal.
