More maies than females reported drinking aicoholic beverages (87.1 percent maies; 76.5 percent females) and using marihuana-hashish (11.6 percent maies; 5.3 percent females). In con- trast, more females than males reported using tranq- uiliizers (17.3 percent fem- aies; 9.4 percent maies) and sleeping pills (10.1 percent femaies; 6.9 percent maies). The 1977 survey again showed that aicohol and ,marihuana use is highest among males aged 18 to 20. To further verify this finding, an additionai 100 Ontario maies aged 18 to 20 were surveyed. 0f this group, 93 percent reported consuming aicohol, 41 percent used marihuana and 6 percent used stimu- lants, This is signifi cantly higher tchan other groups inciuded in the overail 1977 surveýy. However, the 18 to 20 age group reported the lowest use of sleeping pis (3 percent) and tranquillizers (8 percent). Comparison of the 1977 survey statistîcs with 1,976 shows increased use of mnari' huana and stimuiants-pep piils. The number of mnari- huana users increased from 5.8 percent to 8.6 percent between 1976 and 1977 whiie stimulant or pep piii users increased from 0.7 percent to 1.7 percent. A total of 1,059 aduits aged 18 and over, plus an addition- al 100 maies aged 18 to 20, responded to personai inter- views, conducted during June 1977. The total sampie, ex- ciuding the additional maies, was weighted according to the probabiity of a respond- ent being at home for the interview thus providing a full, weighted sample size of 1,772 persons.
