Wednesday, February sth, 1978 Dos and don'ts of cross-country skiing On Saturday, Feb. 4th the Orono Kinsmen Atom Team piayed host to the Shank Insurance team from Bowmanviile and were defeated 9-0. Playing a good game for Orono were Kenny Bailey, Duncan Walker and Warren Lycett. David Bailey played in the Orono net for the first two periods and only allomyed 5 goals. A excellent effort for a Novice goalie. Unfrortunately our regular goalie Alian Hall had an accident last week and suffered a broken arm. The team wili miss his good play in the Orono net. United Counties Atoms club where expert knowledge of the sport and the country- side is available- Cross Country skiing should be done during daylight hours and always in company. A lone skier is more exposed to hazards. The route should follow recognized trails and - skiers should carry a map and compass and learn to use them. A good safety practice is to advise others at home of the intended route and esti- mated departure and arrivai On Saturday, January 2lst the county atom team had showdown in Darlington Sports Centre. Those moving on in showdown is our goaiie Alan Hall wbo performed his drills without difficul- ty. He made 20 saves out of 24 shots in the penalty shot drill. In the 9 yr. old category Blaine Bruton came up with first place as did Doug D)oxtater in the 10 yr. old event. Congratulations and good iluck in the next round goes to the winners and to the other boys who came up short of a victory, thank you for taking part in showdown. 1On Monday, January 30th the Rideau Demollition Midgets hosted the Bowmanville Selects with the Selects wiinning by a score of 3-2 in a well played gamne. Pat Wýiijar0s and David Hutton scored the Orono goals with John West and Preston Long collecting two assists each. MVike Mlitchell, Preston Long and David Hutton playedý a strong gamne. The Rideau Demolition Midgets travelied to Hampton to play Bowmanville Seiects on Saturday, February 4th. Bowmanvile defeated Orono by a score of 3,-I. David Sunstrum opened the scoring for Orono with a goal in the first period, John West drew an assist. Bowmanville made a comeback with three goals in the second period to complete the scoring. The Orono boys played a strong game and are playing their best hockey of the season with the playoffs just around the corner. -David Sunstrum was the top performer for Orono by scoring a goal and some good hitting along the blueline. The Orono Midgets will probably open the playoffs at the Darlington Sports Centre- on Monday, Feb. l3th against the Little Britain-Oakwood winner and the Orono club would appreciate your support. times. Phone M8-5441 ORONO, On Saturday, Feb. 4th the O.M.H.A., Bantams played an exhibition game in the Civic Club in Oshawa against the L.N.H.L. Canadians. The first period saw Orono charge out in front with two goals. The first was off the stick of Steve Stec, assisted by Paul Reed. Paul Reed then got a counter, unassisted. Pete Kruhkert opened the scoring in the second period on a goal with Jim Moffatt and Paul Reed. The game ended with Orono 3, Oshawa 0. Superb goaltending by Dan Mitchell earned hlm a well deserved shut-out. On Monday night Orono had Oshawa back at the Darlington Sports Centre for a game. The Canadians got the first -goal in the first period. Then Steve Stec slapped one in fromn Jim Moffatt and Paul Reed to tie it up and end the first period. Oshawa went ahcad in the second but Paul Reed connected with S teve Stec to tie it Up again.' Then Oshawa got another. Orono came back again to tie it up on a goal by Steve Stec again this time assisted by Ken Prescott and Paul Reed. The third period remained scoreless until the il1:00 minute mark when Oshawa went ahead with a goal. With just 59 seconds left in the game and the face-off in their end Orono pulled the goalie for an extra attacker to try to get the tying goal but it back-fired and Oshawa got another to end the game 5-3. Warren Nicholîs and Pete Kruhkert played exceptionally well.
