A barn owned by J. Gilbert of Starkville was saved from fîre destruction onMonday by the combined efforts of the Orono Fire Depertment and the Newcastle department. The barn is located at Starkville. The caîl was received by the Orono Department about 11:10 Monday'morning with both the pumper and tanker answering the cal. A cali was aiso placed with the Town's public works department to supply a snow piow so that the fire department couid make entrance onto the property. The fire departmnent however laid their lines from the road and were able to knock down the blaze and eventually put the fire out saving the barn except for some minor dam- age. At the time of the fire no animais were housed in the building. Some machinery was taken out of the barn upon the arrival of the snow plow. The fire was reported to have started when the owner was unfreezing a water line in the barn. In speaking with local fire chief Ross Mlercer he said the new tanker had proved itself at this fire providing suffi- cient wýater to keep the fire under control and finally putiting it out. He said the pumper does not carry enough water for most fires and with the added volume ol water in the tan-keýr the firefighters will bave a much better chance to successfuily fieht ftires in the rural areas. . . . . . . . ..... ..... 4 j 0
