A poor peasant womafl with many children w,,as able, to trim her tree with only the humblest things ... nuts and bernies and wvhatever else she was able to hoard through the year. She worked late into the night lmaking hier tree as lovely as possible. Then while shef was asleep spiders crawled from branch to branch leaving a trail of lacy webs over thern al. As a reward for her devotion the Christ Chiildi blessed her tree and ail the spider webs turned to glistening silver! Plants f rom a Il the world . This is the tirne of the year when the florist industry goes into high gear, with the Christrnlas season in full sw,ýing, and we often get the question how vdo, the plants grow that are in your local 'flower shop, or where do al! the cut flowers corne frorn and the answver is not that simple, since the florist industry is as diversified as any other business. First of aI let me say that it is a great business, and 1 arn very happy to be part of this, and 1 would encourage young people to seriously consider going into.the florist business. Last week 1 was at the Airport in Toronto and there was a shiprnent of Diefenba- chia cuttings that had just cornein from Norway for a greenhouse operation in New- rnarket. So you can see that different plants corne from different areas of the world. Another example would be the Yucca cane, which is cut in South America, flown to Holland and rootled and then sornetimes shipped back to Canada, where they are grown on for 3 to 4 mionths and thên sold to the flower shops. Let's trace the life of a couple of plants that are in the stores nom, for the Christrnas season, The poinsettia are startedi fron cutting-s ,wich could be made in Southern California, where they speciali'ze in Hybridizing this planit at the world farnous greenhouse conpany; of Ec-ke Poinsettia. in Eneinitas, California. This cornapany' has been respon- sible for coming up with the Hegg famnily of poinsettias, which used to be grown only in one colour, which is red. Now through careful research they have corne up with white poinsettias and pink, varie- gated and even different shading ln these colours. The cuttings of these new variet- ies are then sent ail over the world, and this is where the poinsettia we have in the local flower shops corne from. The grower will start potting these cuttings in Septernber and gt-ow thern on u.ntil they are sold. The life of the poinsettia has been lengthen- ed by rnany rnonths, and it is now possible to keep them in the house for months on end. The Azalea is another interestîng plant that travels quite a few miles during its life. At one tirne all the Azaleas in the world were grown ln Belgiumn, then shipped across the world to the greenhouse industry, who would grow thern on until they were ready to be sold. The sarne pattern is followed today except that the plant itself is grown in California, Oregon or in other parts of the warrn southerra states. They are started frorn cuttings and grown there for at least 2 years until they become the size where they can be sold, which is usually nothing srnaller than 6 inches across the top. When they are shipped the whole plant will be covered with buds, so that tbey can be forced in the Ontario greenhouse to open in to full bloom. Azaleas are of ten storeci in coolers, so that they can be brought into the greenhouse when they are required. Next week cut flowers frorn around the world. Happy Gardening. The Lastintg Beauty Of A Live Christ(mas Tree There are many reasons for choosing a live tree for the holidays. They are beautiful and fragrant. They are ecologically *acceptable. They are a wise investment in that they can be planted outside your house once Christmas las become a beautiful memory. Some simple observations when choosing and buying your tree will eliminate the possibility of having it dry out quickly and the danger of fire. The heiglit of your ceîling and the width of the space the tree will occupy are important measurements to keep in 'miid when making your purchase. Plan te stand the tree away from a TV set, radiator, heating unit or duot. When selecting the tree test the needies for freshness by bending themn back gently. If they spring back they're fresh. .. if not, beware! Live trees consume a lot of water so choose a holjder with at least a two quart capacity and keep it filled Wo within an inchiof the rim at ail timnes. The stand should have a collar several inches in diameter and s crews t0 hold the tree firm-ly la place. Chop about an inch off the stum-p before putting the tree in water. Trimn-ing the Christmas tree is a celebration ail itself! Many familles have tree trirnming parties for close frîends and relatives. But before you get to ail the fun make sure you inspect the light strings so there are nio frayed ends or exposed wtres. Lights can be strung at randomi or in any pattern your imagination conjures up. Keep larger and heavier liýhts and trirnings on the lower haîf of the tree, tapering toward the top. That added bonus of being able to plant your tree ouf- side your house will keeep the spirit of the holidays alive ail through the year. The tree can be planted oufdoors in eilier of f wo ways. Keeping the root bail moist, carefully put thle tree in a spot pro tected'from the wind, to be planted in the Spring. If you've had the foresiglit f0 dig a hole for your tree before the grounid froze, you can plant your tree right after the holidays are over. The dirt frorn tlie hole must be kepf covered to keep if from freezing also. Once firmly set in the ground you'il be able f0 enjoy your Christmnas tree every season of the year! *Gee Plns IMc n Spl e FOder andow f ho P98n-95i00 *Gifts
