Phone 983-5693 gave approval of their budget for- the year wich shows an average increase across the region of four percent. This will vary slightly from muni- cipality due to differing assessment ratios. The budget calîs for an expenditure of $45,431,628 of w,ýhich amount $15,646,252 has Io be raîsed from the regional taxpayers. The province of Ontario assisted in keeping the rate down due to the fact that they _ - t% allotted to the region a sumn of $ 1.46 million to be used over a three year period to hielp control rising taxes ini the area. The actual increase for regional taxpayers is expect- ed to range fromn $3.23 to perhaps $4,00. The Town of NewcasLe, has yet to announce their tax rate for the year but are, we understand, nearing the comn- pietion of their budget studies The largest increase in expenditures for the region came in the police depart- ment. Rutherford of the Jirby Senate who have sought a study of the assessment of larke Township properties he stated that a letter had been received fromn Margaret Scribner, Minister of Reven- ue that such a study will be undertaken in the very near future. It was pointed out in the letter thiat the Ministry of Revenue is just now complet- ing a simnilar study in the Uxbridge area and when this is completed the study in Clarke and the Town of- Newcastle will be undertaken t was the Kirby Senate which drew attention to the unifairness of the present system and pressured local area politicians to cail for a study. The Kirby group also mustered the support of local M.P.P. Doug Moffatt in the matter. It appears that taxpayers in Orono and Clarke Township as well as Darlington Town- ship pay more than their fair share of taxes than do property owners in Newcastle Village and Bowmanville.
