2-Orono Weekly Timies, Wednesday. March 2nd, 1977 Orono Weekly Times Second Class Mail Registration Numiber 6368 Publishied Every Wednesday at the office of Publication MIain Street, Orono RZov C. Forrester. Editor Eric Patterson, Advertising W'E WILL, NOT HIOLD) OUR BREATHE Over the past two weeks there has been a number of repor.ts to) the effect that the Orono Chamber of Commerce could be involved in the construction of a walkway from Main Street in Orono to the proposed Senior Citizens development west of Oronio. It hias been mentioned that the walkway may well be constructed along an extention of Sabre Street. To us somneone mnust be having an idle drearn and it would be unfortunate if eouincil members persist to follow such a scheme. The Chamiber wvould have to be commended in any effort to assist the Senior citizens development but flt such as buildingo a xalkway which would require thousands of dollars for capital costs and yearly maintenance costs far beyond the reach of the local Chamber of Commerce. In the initial construction the walkway would have to cross two streamis along xith scaling what may be termed a forty foot cliff. Anything of a mnake-shift walkway would be a waste of -money and even if such was constructed those using the walkway would have to be sound of foot even durîng those periods of the year when weather conditions would be ideal. Winter maintenance is beyond any reasonable question. It is quite apparent that counicil members have -not viewed the course of the walkway nor bas in fact anyone who would propose such a proposition. Its time to stop dreaming and to become aware of conditions which do exist. We will not hold our breathe while, this walkway is built. 'Port Hope $30,463.17, SENIOR CITIZENS (Continued fromn page 1) Station street was not now a problemn and that the Cham- ber of Commerce in Orono was willîng to put a walkway along an extension of Sabre Street to the development. Counc. Woodyard qualified the latter statement saying that the Chamber had discus- sed the possibility but had as yeý to commit themselves. He fel t the undertaking would he seriously considered.
