- - - AE C Bextends Port Granby liçence The Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) on Monday înformed the Town of New- castle council that they had granted a licence extension of six months to Eldorado Nuc- lear Ltd. for the management of the Port Granby waste disposaI site in the Town of Newcastle. The former licence expîred as of the end of January 1977. Dr. A.T. Prince, chairman of the AEÇB said that at the end of the six m-onths the board would have to reconi- sider the situation. The Chairman of the AE C13 stated that most of regulat- ions set forth in July by the board had been met by Eldorado ini the operation of the Port Granby disposaI area and as a resuit the licence should be extended. He also pointed out that even though the residuýe may be removed fromn the site that monitoring of the site would have to continue for an unknown number of years. At the present time surface water has been diverted from the site and that a pump and treatment plant was to be instalIled . The-latter operation would have to have approval from council. 1&. A. Lawrence and Mr. Moffatt hoth spoke at the meeting. Mr. John Veldhuis, chair- man of the SEAP organizat- ion, has stated that the decision was dreadful and criminal. He said thé ojrgan- ization lhas instructed their lawyer to take what legal action he feit was advisable at this time. Mr. Veldhuis did nlot know what form the action would take and that the matter had been lef t up to their lawyer.. The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Educat- ion on Thursday evening ratified their contract with 160 miembers of local 1206, cust0dians, cafeteria workers and bus drivers. The mem- bers of the local previously gave their approval a day prior when picket lines were wîthdrawn from the schools. About 75 per cent of the Union members accepted the con- tract by their vote and it has been stated that the members are quite happy with the one-year contract. The new contract gives non.-teaching staff an eight per cent. increase. AI MacLeod, board busi- niess adm-inistrator, said the agreement, retroactive to Nov. 219, will boost the minimum rate fromn $3,95 to $4.27 and the mnaximnum rate from $5.25 to $5.61, an hour. The new deal also includes vacation improvements - four weeks after 10 years instead of after 15 and a niew category, five weeks after 25 years. Drug plan imnprovemenrs were also gained. Nine main- tenance workers got an addit- lonal mileage payment, brin- ging their rate tl1 23 cents a mile. Ôt'her mileage rates remnain at 18 cents a mile. The board also agreed to not contract work out if subcontracting will resuit in layoffs of local 1206 members and agreed to change the designation of caretakers to custodians. The board and the unioýn begîn talks again in Septem- ber for a new contract. Would like plant at Blind River The mayor of Blind river, Ron McKinnon, questioned «the wisdom of removing 630 acres in Port Granby from argicultural production to accommodate a uranium ref- .anery proposed by Eldorado Nuclear Ltd. here. Mayor McKinnon in a letter to John Veldhuis, chairman of the Save the Environment from Atomic Pollution (SEAP) said his community would lie a better location for the planned $80 million facil- ity. "The North Shore provides a ready dumnping area (for refinery wastes) by using the worked out mining shafts adjacent to the proposed site (Spragge)," said the mayor. The area which Mr. MclÇin- non referred to is about 17 miles east of Blind River and 90 miles by rail from Elliot Lake where some of Eldor- ado's raw material origin- a tes. He said il was only reason- able to have Eldorado locate here consîdering the economn- ic situation, high unemploy- ment, along the North Shore and the proximnity of the raw materials. The letter which finished wvithi the statement: "We desperately need processing industries to create steady employment"-will be forwar- ded to Canada's Minister of Eenrgy Alastair Gillespie by SEAP. A siilar letter was sent to ,Mr. Gillespie earlier this mronth by Mayor McKinnon. SEAP, which was organiz- ed last year protests onily the existence of Elçlorado's waste. disposai site present at Port Granby and the one planned for the proposed refinery.
