NEWS 4-H CLUB ACHIEVEMENT DAYS AT ORONO FAIR -Friday a 'nd Saturday, Sept- ember 7 and 8th, were two very busy days for Durham 4-H Club members wihq took part in Club Achievement days in conjunction with the Durham Cen~tral Fair at Orono. The South Durham Dairy Club heîd their Achieve- ment Day on Friday, Sept- ember 7th with 43 4-H mem- bers exhibiting calves in both Shiowmanship and Type Clas- ses before the two judges for the day, Mr. John Krauter of Toronto and Mr. Morris Jeb- son of Beaverton. There were also a large number of 4-H Agricultural and 4-H, Homemaking Club Exhibits on display in the 4-H Exhibit's Tçnt and these were wvell received by everyone who did visit the tent. On Saturday morning, Sept- ember 8th the Durham 4-H Rabbit Club held their Achievement Day in conjunc- tion with the Central Ontario Rabbit Breeders Club show at the Fair. A total of il members in the Rabbit Club exhibited their animals for the judge with top placing in the Rabbit Show going to Nancy Knox of R.R.i Hampton. 2nd place in the 4-H Rabbit Club Judging was a tie between Debbie Zealand of R.R.1 Campbellcroft and Elain Kel- logg of R.R.1 Port Hope. During the two days at the Fair, Club Members who were involved in Achievement Days were also asked 'to write Quizzes as part of their year's work. This kept everyone quite busy, but from corn- ments heard from everyone, it appears that the 1973 4-H Achievement Days at the Durham Central Fair were a bigger and better success than ever. In the inter-club 4-H Showmanship Competition, the Grand Champion Live- stock Showman selected by Mr. John Krauter, judge for the 4-H Achievement Days, was won by Ron Metcalf of R.R.2 Bowmanville. Reserve Grand Champion Livestock Showman was Elaine Kellogg of R.R.1 Port Hope.- In the Livestock Showmanship Competition, the 8 competi- tors representing Dairy, Beef, Swine and Sheep are asked to show the 4 different types of livestock involved and they are scored on their perform- ance in the ring before the judge. This year, as in past years, the competition was very close, won with a point spread of 9 points separating the 8 competitorsinvolved in the competition. The Durham 4-H Club Lead- er's Association and we at the Ontario Ministry of Agricul- ture and Food would like to thank the Durham Central Fair Board Directors, who co-operated s0 much in help- ing to make the 4-H Achive- ment Days such a success. Special thanks also goes to Club Leaders who helped with individual Club Achievemnent Days or in setting up exhîbits, displays and whatever else was involed in carrying out this large show.
