ORONO WEEKLY TIMES, MONDAY, DECEMBER 23rd, 1968 Where' The ish Are During the pust sunimer creel Oess~rews condueted suirveys aianglers on Sturgeon, Rice, Bal- ,ai and Pigeon Lakes with the Objective of deteriining the bar- Reeve Township of Clarke vest of fish, the fishing effort expencled and the numbers of anglers w'ho fish these lakes. The creel census method bas heen designed so that the total num- ber of each species of fish, the total effort in terins of number c(f angling hoýurs expended and the total number of anglers can be calculated by a series of extra- polations froin the data collected. The analysis of the data col- ]ected on Sturgeon and Rice Lakes has now been compieted and it is Pxpe'cted that the an aly- sis for Balsam and Pigeon Lakes wilIl be ýcompleted in the sicar future. During the' period between May and Septeinher, 1968, a total of 37,717 anglers fished in Stur- geon Lake for a total of 147,111 hours. During this period 40,303 walleye, 131, large-mouth bass, 4,752 smalllmouth bass and 7i28 maskinonge were taken. This rep- resented an average of 13.9 an- gler-hours and a harvest of 4.3 game fish for each surface acte of Sturgeon Lake. If it is assumed that the average flsh weighs one pound, a total of over 23 tons of game fish were taken from Stur- geon Lake in 1968. This does flot include the weight represented by sunfish, perch, carp, bullheads etc. This harvest is in close agree- Ment with resuits determined from the eréel census coverage in previous years and appears ta be fleur the maximum hurvest thut under current enviraumental con- ditions.. Further investigations can, be expected froi this lake will be continued. In Rice Lake the creel census yiëlded inforIniation, very similar ta thut encountered in this luke in 1967. Approximately 117,239 aiglers fished for 556,633 hours to catch 60,402 wulleye, 7,354 lurgemouth buss, and 1,727 small mouth buss. No maskinonge were reported in the'ereel census data, lthough it is known that a fair nuiber of this species were cap- tured. The d1iserepuncy between these data and the known facts can be explained by the small sampling coverage. The total numiber of game fish captured wus 69,484 ta yield 3.02 fisfl per acre of this lake. The tonnage of game fish was approx- îmately 35 tons. This figure does Albert's Texaco GENERAL REPAIRS Phone 983-5249 Orono Mr. and Mrs. Carl Billb gs, M43. C. Bavey, not include the weight of sun- fish, rock buss, bullhe-ads, etc. knowu ta be tuken froin this luke in larger quantities that iu any of the Kawartha Lakes. It' is thaught' that the abundance of these non-game fish may be an important factor preventhig a greuater harvest 0f gaine fish. Fishing pressure in'Rice Lake wus estimuted ta be- 24.2 rod- hours per acre, a fugure which is nat cansidered high. Overuli fish- ing success mlas approximuately, the saine as in previous years, ai- tbaugh very poor fisihng was ex- perieuced in- August as deter- mihed froin the creel census, general observations and the rate of tag returuýs during Aug- ust.
