ORONO WEEKLY TIMES, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 29th, 1968 The following is a discussion which took place recently during a moiiiing service at the Orono United Church. This is the se- cond and final portion of the dis- cussion. Richard Black. I agree with Pat. I don't think the churcli has really done anything for the teen- agers - they have been left go. We cater to the young and after about twenty-five years when we are married we are expected back in.1 Mhister: This is one of the very great problems we have but when we talk about the faniilY of God we have in mnd the fain- ily in the church fellowship and one of the things that has hap- pened ini the past is that we created the Sunday School here and the church there. We saw the Sunday School for the quite youhg and the church for the old- er people and when it came up tu the teens the teenage people perhaps said, "we are nut old peuple like the people in the church, What they talk about 88c SALE 88c SALE 88c SALE CONTINUES TO END 0F 0F THE WE Here are just a few of the many items yon can dtoose from FLOWERING BULBS- Double Begonias, package of four ..... 69e Hanging Basket Begonias. ...... 3 for 69e j Gloxînias 67e Fancy Leaf Caladium 67c. And so they walk out Now we have per- haps encouraged that. Many par- ens are inclined lio say that a young person could not be ex- pected to go to Sunday Sehool and then- to church or else they have feit' that we shouldn't ask them to go to church because they couldn't geý anything from it. But to gain so'uething is flot only what you hear and under- stand but something that you feel. Worship 'is something most of ail in what you feel. Richard: think that the way the services are conducted is keepig a lot of the teenagers fromn comn- ing. 1 don't think that very many teenagers like to sit and listen to somebody telling them their own interpretatioù of what God is like and what the Bible is like. They like to discuss it with the minis- ter or among themselves. They like to be in on the service. Minister: Do you feel that this kind of service once in a while gives this opportunity that. you are talking about. Richard: Yes, I thik it does. Minister: When we try to make opportunities for young people to enter into dialogue say throygh the HiC groups or through other youth activities they don't us- ually respond in great numbers. Why would you feel this is so? Have they been told that the place for young people is to be seen and not heard. Richard: Not really that. A lot of them are afraid of what some- one is going to say about them and what someotne else's opinion will do to them. They won't stand up and speak for them- selves. hI many instances -vou can't talk to adults. It seems that aduits want you to talk up to them ýand not across to them as though the young person knows very littie. Minister: Would you feel that in general this is the impression of young peuple? ý Richard: I thffik it is but not as much as it used to be. Minister: 1 have heard quite a numberof people from this coin- munity and congregation really speak with warmth and enthus- iasm and praise for the fine things that many, of the youbg people do. Minister: What do you feel, Richard,' that we could do as a congregation'in the worship ser- vice to make it meaningful, be- yond what we have said to the young people. Richard: I think we should lhave a place for the type of service we have today. Mhsiter: Dialogue which cornes out of the need of people gives us an opportunity to hear and then to speak and share meaning- fully and relate as a family. Richard: If anyone, in the coni- gregation wanted to stand up ask a question they could direct t*e conversation in a meaning- fui way, Miister. 1 would be delighted if Flowe-rs Calways an someone did this in earnestness. Richard: I think the congregation would frown down upon anyone who did this. ,Mfiister: I think that could easily lie s0 unless people have been conditioned a littie bit., They feel that this is arrogance on the part of the person who did so, or that they are insensitive. How- ever, I think that we who are old- er have been tclanging a littie more quickly than we used to, that some of the old barriers are cuming down, but we d o not wish to lose the truth and value of a dignified and reverent wor- ship service. Such a thing as you suggest does not lack reverence if done i the right way and could be very meaningful. I now change the subi ect and refer to a comment 1 heard you make some time ago and to which 1 made no attempt to answer. You were concerned about the war i Vietnam. Would you have any comment this morning? Richard: My problem is, how can we honestly beleive that man is made in the image of God when we look arounid and see the things we do, such things as would cause the devil himself to lie terrified? We seem to be s0 evil. How could we be made in the image of God? Surely the image of Go1d means someone who is incapable of evil?, Ministe r: My understaïfdin'g of the image of God is not quite so definite as youi are suggesting.. I f eel thiat there is a great deal of truith in the thoughit tInat being Made in the imnage of God nieans that we are a higheIir creation - that God breathed his spirit into his creation, man. ManÏ can comn- municate in a different way than the rest of creation. When you first ma-de this comment 1 thouight, how can one or many who are created in the image of God take. the lives of other people who are made i the im- age of God. There is a sense in which we are warring against God when we war against each other. Being made in the image, of God has to do with the spirit ual natureof mani. Somehow we are 'an inperfect image. Richard: But an im perfect image cahinot reflect what isn't there. Minister: We have free will or'. choice and, we choose things which mar the image. Tha which gleams may reflect'an image, but tarnish wiIl cause the image to be distorted. if we could'not sin we would become robots of some sort. Ne are told that when God ereated he looked at his creatiow and sar that it was good. The above discussion is drasti- cally reduced and various toplcs, have been left out completely, but the main trend of discussion, has bëbn reported.
