A certain old church engaged an artist to brighten up and, repair the lovely artwork whichi had become faded with the vears. He completed the job and sent in a bill for $87.30 - which the good f olk thought was a bit steep, so they asked him to item- ize the account. On the complete list werýe itemls like these: For correcting the Ten Com- mandments $5.U2 For renewing9 heaven, touching up the angel's wings and adjust- ing the stars $7.14 For touching up Purgatory and restoring Jost souls $306 For brightening up the flames of Hlel and doing odd jobs for Lhe damned $717 And so they considered the cost of bringing a religious symbol up to date. Times have not changed, for we too, pay a price ta keep our religious f aith contemporary. Yes- terday's f aith will not support us today, nor wilI the faith of our parents - the church of ou r child- hood. We too, must pay the price to have faith that works in a space age. We are conscious of the fact that many things do be- corne out-dated, except in relig- ious matters and here we seem to bc blind a nd insensitive to change. Change in transportation means change in roads, laws, education, mode of living, value of distances. Change in conditions means change in language, new words are added, old words take in new meaning - we can soon bc out- dated. There is always the chal- lenge to bring our religion up to date 80 that we have a faith that sustains us today and so that we express that faîth in a way that other people of today will coame to know and experience it. Christ was neyer out of date and is not out-dated by the space age, even though his eartbly life was1 lived when most people, walked tu reach their destination. He came to a people whose relig- ion was not being expressed in a way which met the need of their time. They tried to look back too often, to relive the past, to meet the need of the day with the custom of the past." Jesus said to them, "Ye have heard it said of old lime, but 1 say unto you. . ." Hie also said "I arn not corne to destroy the law, but to fuif il] il." He paîd the supreme price to make men see their own necd and the possibilities which God continually offers men. In the illustration we realize that there were many reasons why the paintings needed to bc refreshened: paint fades, dust and smoke create film; moisture disturbs the foundation; cracks and chips may appear. Jesus came to restore man to his right- fui place and expression of life. When he is given-,the opportun- iby of restoring souls he trans- forms - selfishness into selfless- ness; despair into hope; weakness into strength; fear -into peace; hatred into love. He alone can unite the hearts of- men in al races in the bond of brotherhood. Is our own faith up to date, or are we trying to draw from the faith of our fathers. The old time religion was good enough for mother, it was good enough for father, but is it good enough for me? No, it needs to be brought up to date so that it is a vital ex- perience for us. If we stay with the faith of our childhood, after a while. impressions fade, res- ponse weakens, attention gets out of focus. Many still livé and think in terms of the things they learned in Sunday School, but we have been called to become ma- ture Christians. TheWre are many things that Christ would yet tell us. We are challenged by Jesus' reference to the faith of a child, but Hie did not mean that we are to remain in a childish expression of faith. We are called to use our gifts, flot to restore old paintings, but te transform the living and per- haps as the old painter put it, "to do odd jobs for the damned." The cost of keeping our relig- Ion up to date is, the throwing away prejudice, which is here a- mong us; dusting off sound be- fiels which are stored away; touching up immature beliefs which many of us hold; helping to change wrong environment into good. These things are always necessary.
