Catholic school board looks to absorb funding cuts in budget by Kathy Yanchus Metroland Media West 13 | Friday, February 27, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com An anticipated reduction in provincial funding will "pose some challenges" for the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) as its 2015/2016 budget deliberations begin. The Province of Ontario is expected to decrease its educational budget by up to two per cent over the next couple of years, in an effort to balance the books by 2017/2018. A one percent decrease in HCDSB's provincial allocation would result in a decrease of $3.1 million annually, according to a report presented Unifor president touts investment continued from p.3 "There are not many industries that have a job creation ratio as good as the auto industry," Flynn said. "If you invest in the auto industry, you're also investing in the entire community." According to Industry Canada, the auto sector employs more than 117,000 people, and another 377,000 indirectly. As part of the $700-million upgrade first announced less than two years ago, Ford added more than 250 robots, while upgrading the already 1,000 in operation on its production line, to help with precision and accuracy in building the Edge. "This vehicle's incredibly complex... it really required more robotics than we had," said Ford Motor Company of Canada President and CEO Dianne Craig. The Ford Edge will be sold in North America later this year and eventually more than 100 markets worldwide, including for the first time, those in Western Europe. Catering to the booming 21 per cent share that utility vehicles hold on the European market, Oakville's assembly plant will manufacture the new Edge for the first time with right-hand-drive, as well as a diesel engine. "This is a state-of-the-art plant," Craig said, noting the Oakville complex buys $4 billion annually from parts manufacturers. Unifor National President Jerry Dias said the investments and resulting job creation means the "start of the rebirth" for manufacturing and shows "all the stars are aligned for major investment." "Today is about the rebirth of the industry. Today is about Ford understanding the importance of investing in Canada... recognizing that we have the workforce to make the next steps," he said. "This is proof-positive that Canada is an incredible place to build cars." at a regular meeting of the board Feb. 17. "The 2015/2016 budget process will certainly pose some challenges, especially given the likelihood of reduced education funding, as identified in the Ministry's (of Education) 2015/16 Education Funding Consultation Guide," commented HCDSB chair Jane Michael. "We will work with senior staff to analyze the identified challenges, and will continue to find ways to manage our resources, never losing sight of our ongoing focus on supporting the needs of our students. "We are fortunate in Halton to be in a growth position, and are hopeful that additional enrolment will partly offset the expected reduction in funding." Once ministry grants are released by the end of March, budget information sessions begin with trustees, staff and the public before the budget is brought before the board for approval in June. Consultations between the ministry and school board officials, as well as teacher federations and student groups were held in the fall in an effort to identify efficiencies, make better use of school space, strengthen community partnerships and share savings.
