COOL CAMPUS Bud Donovan knew some thing wasn't quite right when he went for his annual physical seven years ago. "I had an enlarged prostate and had a scraping done," said Donovan, who agreed to discuss his bout with cancer to warn other men of this disease during Prostate Cancer Awareness Week, Sept. 1 6 -2 2 . "A couple o f years later, my family doctor sent me to Dr. Richard Casey, who took a biop sy, and yes, he found cancer." Casey, a local urologist, is the director of the Fe/Male Health Clinic. Donovan, 75, considers him self lucky. He didn't require sur gery, and beat the disease after 35 sessions of radiation starting in 1998. "My PSA (prostate specific antigen) count dropped from 14.2 to .02," he said, adding he now has his PSA checked regu larly. This procedure is a blood test that that measures how much PSA the prostate is producing. "But, during the radiation treatments, I suffered from emo tional distress and hot flashes," said Donovan, baffled by this side effect. He never lost his hair. "I'm one of the lucky ones," he continued. "I have two friends with prostate cancer. One of them urinated blood and they can't go any further with the radiation for the other." Donovan, a volunteer at Ian Anderson House, a free standing cancer hospice, said he "feels great," and "plays a little golf and a little hockey." His volun teering at Ian Anderson House is his way of giving back to the facility that cared for his daugh ter who died of cancer three years ago at age 42. He is living proof that early detection goes a long way in sur viving prostate cancer, some thing Dr. Casey will address tonight at the Galaxy Club. Casey's lecture titled Advances in the Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment o f Prostate Cancer, will address the importance of rectal examina tions as part of an annual physi cal for men. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men and the second most com mon cause of death among men after lung cancer, states the Canadian Cancer Society. Symptoms of prostate cancer include frequent, difficult and painful urination; dribbling urine, blood or pus in the urine, pain in the lower back, pelvic area and upper thighs, and painful ejaculation - the prostate is the male sex organ. This year, the society has pro vided $2.1 million to its Prostate Cancer Research Initiative. In 1997, the National Cancer Institute of Canada launched a Prostate Cancer Research Initiative with a start-up donation of $1.25 million from the Canadian Cancer Society. The goal of the Initiative is to foster more research in Canada on prostate cancer. Since launch ing, the Prostate Cancer Research Initiative has awarded 24 grants totaling more than $6.6 million. Dr. Richard Casey, a urologist at Halton Healthcare Services, and director of the Fe/Male Health Centre, will provide a comprehensive overview of prostate cancer and answer questions. In Canada each year, more than 13,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. It is the most common type of cancer found in men today and mainly affects men over 50. While prostate problems occur in nearly half of all Canadian men over the age o f 40, more often than not, the problems are caused by medical con ditions other than cancer. The best way to detect prostate cancer early is to have a rectal exam as part of your regular check up. Men can be screened for prostate cancer through the prostate specific antigen (PSA) test. It is a blood test that measures how much PSA the prostate is producing. Many times growths on the prostate gland can be found before you develop any symptoms. If the growth is cancer, treatment can begin before the cancer cells have a chance to spread to other parts of the body. The cause of prostate cancer is not known, although diet may be a factor. Individuals with prostate cancer and their fam i lies, and anyone interested in the prevention and early detection this type of cancer, are encouraged to attend tonight's seminar at the 707 Galaxy Banquet Hall, 475 North Service Rd east of Trafalgar Road. It opens with displays and refresh ments at 6:30 p.m. and the seminar starts at 7 p.m. This event has been organized by Halton Healthcare Services (Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital), in partnership with the Fe/Male Health Centre, the Canadian Cancer Society - Oakville Unit, and Wellspring.
