Three generations bring Christmas to the animal shelter by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff 51 | Thursday, December 25, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Two Oakville youths and their grandmother recently brought the Christmas spirit to the animals at the Oakville and Milton Humane Society (OMHS). Eileen Wright and her grandsons Liam, 14, and Callum Donnelly , 12, visited the local animal shelter last Thursday and dropped off the proceeds from their Peaches Passion Holiday Event. The trio asked classmates, teachers, neighborhood friends and relatives to give what they could from the OMHS Wish List or a financial donation to help local animals this holiday season. "They worked incredibly hard, making posters, sending emails and organizing all of the items as they came in," said Brenda Dushko, OMHS manager of fund development and communications. "They had amassed a huge amount of items, significant financial donations and much needed gift cards that we will use to purchase items for the animals that need our help." Callum said his Christmas wish is that other The Oakville & Milton Humane Society (OMHS) was the recipient of a donation of much-needed pet care items, pet food and more than $500 in cash -- proceeds from the Peaches Passion Holiday Event. The idea for the event came after Wright's mother -- Jean Austin, the boys' great grandmother -- who is in the early stages of Alzheimers, could no longer take care of her cat, Peaches. "As we know, in the early stages, it can be hard to intervene in a loved one's life," said Dushko. "As a result, the family was unaware that because of her (Wright's) mom's Alzheimer's, her little cat Peaches wasn't getting the care she needed. "As soon as the family found out, they intervened and did everything medically possible to try to help little Peaches, sadly to no avail. They were devastated and wanted to do something for all the homeless animals that need to be helped." The spirit to help rescued animals even spread to Wright's husband, Jim, the boys' grandfather, who built two stainless steel cat trees, which were installed in the new cat colony and cat socializing rooms at OMHS last Friday. "This is a great story of three generations of a family coming together to help the animals this season," said Dushko. For more information or to help out OMHS, visit www.omhs.ca.
