Surveillance video at the secondary school, near Third Line and Upper Middle Road West, shows an unknown man, carrying a black backpack, entering the building around 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 8. "He is observed on a still shot on video putting what appear to be pamphlets in random lockers," said the school's liaison officer Cst. The school was unlocked because Abbey Park staff was still on site. Kellas said custodial staff noticed something suspicious about the man and approached him to inquire what he was sliding inside students' lockers. "When the custodial staff asked him (what he was doing), he said he was leaving presents," Kellas said. A student at the high school, who spoke to the Oakville Beaver on the condition of anonymity, provided photographs of the comic pamphlet that is roughly the size of a small letter-sized envelope. A full version of the comic titled Back from the Dead, which is distributed by Chick Publications and available for purchase on its website, details a story about a man who is saved by God after being pronounced dead. Chick Publications, which is based in California, publishes subject matter that is selfdescribed as being Evangelical. Kellas said at this time no criminal offence has taken place, despite the religious tone of the pamphlets. "The pamphlets themselves are comic strips," he said. The student who brought the comic to the Beaver's attention described them as being "homophobic and extremely religious...." According to the Halton police website, a hatemotivated crime is described as a "criminal offence committed against a person and/or property, which is motivated by hate/bias or prejudice based on race, national or ethnic origin, language, colour, religion, sex, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation or other similar factors." Kellas said, in this case, the material is not constituted as a hate crime and as of right now is an isolated incident across the public and Catholic school systems. "Nobody has brought up an incident of this magnitude... it seemed random and sporadic," he said. But the incident at Abbey Park is not the first case of Chick's material making its way into the hands of Halton youths. In 2013, a Milton resident reported that a comic pamphlet titled Love the Jewish People was slipped into his daughter's locker while she was out trickor-treating on Halloween. "If further incidents arise then we will be looking at charges," Kellas said. The man seen at Abbey Park is described as Caucasian, 2228 years old, and was wearing dark jeans, white Nike shoes, a black jacket, and a lightcoloured hoodie, and carried a black backpack.
