www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, December 25, 2014 | 12 Letter to the Editor Harnessing the power of neighbourhood goodwill on Beechfield Road Social connection, support and community are essential to long-term health, happiness and success. In our quest to create a "more livable Oakville," we need to harness the power of community. The residents of Beechfield Road -- the street that we had the good fortune of moving to -- embrace this. On the May long weekend, the Decker family entertains local residents with a lavish dinner and fireworks display. Many Fridays in the spring and summer, neighbours host impromptu Boulevard Club parties, pulling out lawn chairs, bringing appetizers to share and gathering to connect and catch up. Several August long weekends have been celebrated with street closures, performances by local musicians and other talented residents, thanks to a Falls family initiative. The Forbes family hosts the annual Halloween costume party. When an illness or death afflicts a neighbour, someone will step up to shovel a driveway, bring food or provide whatever service is most in need. Local family milestones are also celebrat- ed with enthusiasm. But I'd like to draw special attention to a tradition started 10 years ago by Pat Decker and Kelly Falls, with special help from the Mathew and Dalby families. On Dec. 24, residents are recruited to help illuminate the street with candles for Santa's runway. It is a sight to see and worth sharing. Thank you to my very thoughtful neighbours for helping create a `more livable Beechfield'. Oakville, too, is `more livable' thanks to you.
