- Full Text
Word was received in Toronto on Monday that Ernest D. Watkins of 28 Edgar Avenue, a prominent businessman, formerly of Hamilton, died following an operation in the general hospital at Brooklyn, New York. The operation was performed at noon and was thought to be successful. Mr. Watkins rallied and then collapsed at 3:30 in the afternoon. Ernest Delong Watkins was the son of the late Thomas C. Watkins, who for many years was identified with various business interests in Hamilton, and was educated at Upper Canada College, Toronto. Afterwards, he was associated with his father in the management of the "Right House", one of Hamilton's largest department stores. In 1911 Mr. Watkins moved to Toronto to look after his father's business interests there. He had many friends in Toronto and elsewhere, having travelled extensively on this continent and in Europe. He was a member of the Ontario Club, the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, the Mississauga Golf and Country Club and the Scarboro Golf and Country Club. In religion he was an Anglican. Until his removal from Hamilton Mr. Watkins for a number of years acted as a Lieutenant in the 91st Regiment, Canadian Highlanders, of Hamilton. Mr. Watkins married Olivia, only daughter of the late Walter Nelles of Grimsby, and is well known in this district. He is survived by his wife, two children, a son, Reginald, and a daughter, Constance, and two brothers, Reginald and William, both of Toronto.
