TYPE By STEVE JONESCU Sports Editor HELMETS FOR KlooiEs Ray GariEpy fOrmer rofessional hockey player in both the NHL and AHL as often said it was tougu er to play intermediate hockey than in the pro ran His reason In pro hockey you pretty well know where your mates are and for that matter where the opposition is This means that once you reach pro ranks you know the fundamentals of the game Positional is the thing This means too that the lower on the ladder you are in hockey the more chance there is for injury because of crude play and vice versa Getting to the bottom of the ladder inage it then seems reasonable to assume that most injuries would result in kiddies hockey So it is agreed Youngsters dont know the right way to hold their sticks They fall lot and sticks and blades go every which way Its just fortunate that few injuries do happen As added insurance of this move is under foot to have all youngsters in Barrie Legion hockey wear helmets This by the way was thought of long before any of boxings recent head injuries For the Barrie group this would mean about 750 helmets It would include about 50 good facemasks for the goaltenders as well The how to acquire the helmets at reasonable rate is being pondered The thing for certain is that no one wants to see youngster hurt especially through healthful recreation It is agreed by many much smarter than this writer that helmets in all levels of hockey will be mandatory within few years So in order to adjust to them it seems more reasonable that they be worn right from childhood the time your lad plays his first game of hockey If there is anyone adult or child that feels wear ing of helmets is for slssies alonetake look at the NHL Charlie Burns of Boston Bruins who continued in hockey after serious head injury wears helmet Hes not the type that takes backward step to any one in the league Warren Godfrey of Detrmt Red Wings is another And as for masks the greatest goaltender in the NHL wears one Everyone knows Montreals Jacques Plante certainly commend the persons who put helmets on our kids heads as emphatic thing Those who are working hard to do so are again Ideservmg of credit and thanks JUST NOTES lot of persons who purchased tick ets on the Irish Sweepstakes and hoped beyond all hope that theyd win are saying now that they knew they didnt have chance never wm anything is the wail It cant be too many more days before the ice es capes the bay If you dont have an iceout ticket from Barrie Athletic Association youd better hustle ticket for every minute of the day has been printed
