INNISFII NOTES Its Springtime Down South By RG5 Down here we are now seeing the early tinge of the spring leaf across the swamps and forests The llowering trees of which there are many varieties are showing their colors add tag to the beauty of the already lovely countryside in unitno see this color one needs to drive some of the back roads IWJ from the developmedts low evcr many of the homes have decorative trees coming into bloom on lawns it is spring now downsouth Next month the peaches will be in bloom ill the states to the nortll and here the orange blos wins will be appearing among the fruit already on the trees filling the air with perfume as one drives along or course spring brings its own beauties as it works its way north and adds to the delights of the trip back home Timing it right one can drive through spring beauty all the way and arrive in time to enjoy it all again in beautiful Ontario MAY VISIT FLORIDA We understand that Reeve and Mrs Cochranc are waiting for lull in township affairs in or der to slip away for trip out of the snow and frosts but the opportunity does not seem to have arrived One party com pares the reeve to Martha of Biblical times who was care int and worried over many things of course we knew loe would be hesitant to leave the helm of the ship he is pilott ing but we do feel that perhaps he would be able to get away for few weeks nr vhilethe good roads conve on was on us he does not participate in the biggest commodity dispensed at that convention We will just Small University Is Out Of Date President Says TORONTO CFt Dr Hagey president of the Univer sity of Waterloo said Thursday night it appears as though the small independent university college is just about as obsolete as the red schoolhouse He told the Canadian Indus trial Traffic League large unl rersities are necessary because It now is practically ne cessity that the curriculum for each faculty include large number of optional subjectsI This increases teaching costs and requires sizable student enrolment to support the ex panded courses it now is almost necessity for university to provide fa cilities for research and gradu ate studies in order to attract teachers Such programs are costly and again require large student body to support them financially And he said in recent years science has gained such im portance that most liberal arts students are required to include one or more science courses in their programs for an arts de gree Dr Hagey said most Ontario universities have more than 3000 students The enrolment at Toronto university now is in excess of 15000 students and the university is contem plating further increase The University of Waterloo one of Ontarios newest colIEEes has an enrolment of more than 1300 after five years hope that we have an opportun ity of meeting the reeve when he does arrive down in the land of the sun PENSION INCREASE The big news coming out of federal parliament seems to be the adding of $10 to the old age pension We have discussed this with quite few pensioners down this way and they seem to feel that the increase OI $10 is not important to them They agree with the suggestion that the basic pension which goes to everyone over the age of 70 is not sufficient for anyone to live on and that $10 is not go ing to make it stretch enough to pay rents and buy food if that is the only source of in come for an individual or couple They feel that in many cases the old age pension in its basic sum is sufficient and is just added for luxuries EDUCATIONAL DISCUSSION recent meeting called at Stroud by the Farm Forum to discuss educational matters drew only nine attendants It would appear that education which takes about half the turn es paid by local ratepayers is something that is not worth an evening out in the cold to at tend tVitll the subject of cen tral schools predominant and many other matters that should be interesting to people who are educating children it seems surprising that so few bother to get together and discuss the situation Some time back there were home and school clubs formed tin areas across the township and it was thought these might bring out interested persons who would bring school matters to the fore We have offered space in this column to any who cared to make public com ments on school or other mat ters but have had little or no correspondence Apparently the public is quite satisfied with the way things are being done and have no complaints or cri ticisms in oils where hes really happy about our modern bowling far llrtles and friendly atmosphere 402
