probably prevail In hobby where the model you build actually performs the same function as the original terrific strcss comes on tech nlcal perfection in building These men are serious about their hobby not to the point of excluding everything else but serious enough to spend in some oasis of radio controlled models upwards of $600 OFFICERS ACTIVE Earl Ricketts is the president of the Barrie club and Is the first to dabble in the esoteric radiocontroi field in the Bar rie Club His radio system is only just begun but he hopes that it will be finished in time to fly this summer Peter Alexander is the secre taryvireasurcr Ron Maison the vicepresidcnt and Don Near the public relations officer Garnet Pratt locul hobby shop owner is an adviser and friend of the club He helps out on the ground at contests and gcnersl ly kccps the club informed of new developments in models Model aircraft flying gives to the enthuslas more than what the average hobbyist would get out of his model The man who builds an exact replica of say ship and thou sticks it inside bottle has the satisfaction of reproducing to the finest detail classic schooner But the model airplane builder must produce in cases of scale build ing an exact replica but then must study mechanics to cer tain degree so that the engine he selects will perform prolper ly Then he can study tile chemistry and find the right fuel Next could come elec tronics and home built radio control unit Finally he has he hopes the satisfaction of seeing his model actually fly ing ihorugh the air with him self as the pilot This Is the supreme and ultimate goal of the enthusiast NATIONAL GROUP national organization cali ed the Model Aernoauilcs As sociation of Canada is gov erning body which supplies in tho monthly bulletin new mod els new ideas new rules and regulations for contests and letters from various club mem hers across Canada stating ace iivities and grievances It is body made up of enthusiasts members of clubs from and scale flying The stunt plane isa specially designed model which can do tricks in the air an ord inary plane could not Scale flying ncludes the operation of planes built identically to an actual aircraft such as the Piper Cub or Catalina Flying Boat These planes will per form almost the same as the real thing COMBAT FLYING Combat flying uses an eight foot crepepoper streamer on the tail of llying wing These planes travel sometimes over 90 milcs per hour and the object is to have two contestants in the circle attempting to cut the ribbon streamer of the others plane with your propeller When the streamer is down to about six inches the fun really begins Don Near chuckled Rat racing has three to five or six flyers in the circle who must race through precrib ed number of laps Gasoline stops are usually necessary and the commercial model air plane fuels must be used These fuels are very hot and mo del usually stays up maxi mum of about six minutes Rat races where the flying has con tinued over five hours have been recorded so one can ima gine the number of gas stops necessary The Barrie club is now look ing for new members it has good flying site now and Barrie Airways is supplying the office for meetings If we could build up our membership we would be top flight club Earl Ricketis said last night He pointed out that there are quite few enthusi asts in the Barrie area
