www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, February 12, 2015 | 48 Hornets lock up first place in PWHL The Oakville Hornets clinched first place in the Provincial Women's Hockey League standings Sunday with a 2-2 tie against the Toronto Aeros. Christina Putigna scored midway through the third period to tie the game 2-2 after Toronto had scored twice in the first six minutes of the frame. The Hornets outshot Toronto 4-0 in overtime -- and 34-25 on the afternoon -- but had to settle for the tie. That was enough for the 29-2-4 Hornets to wrap up first place. Olivia Atkinson also scored for Oakville and Nikki Cece made 23 saves. Cece is still undefeated this season (14-0-2) and the Hornets are 7-0-2 in their last nine. Two nights earlier, the Hornets got two goals from Cassidy MacPherson and shutout netminding from Daniela Paniccia to blank the Durham West Lightning 3-0. Madison Field also scored for the Hornets, who outshot their visitors 26-13. Oakville still has three games remaining in the regular season, including home games tomorrow (Friday) against the Ottawa Lady Senators and Saturday versus the London Devilettes. Start times at Joshua's Creek Arenas are 8:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively. The Hornets will close out the regular season Feb. 22 in Whitby. Holy Trinity's Chris Hawkins (in white) runs into some tough defence from Corpus Christi's Simisola Shittu (11) and Isaac Mununga during last Thursday's Halton senior boys' basketball Tier 1 game at Trinity. | Graham Paine -- Oakville Beaver -- @Halton_Photog OHL prospect Gallant scores in Blades debut continued from p.47 combined 25 games over .500. Oakville beat the Stouffville Spirit 5-1 Friday and Lindsay Muskies 7-0 Saturday (both games were at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex) to improve to 6-1-1 in its last eight games. OHL draft prospect Zachary Gallant scored for the Blades in his OJHL debut Friday and added a goal and an assist Saturday. Kamil Tkaczuk, Ryan Burns, Christian Rajic and Ryan Garvey also potted markers Friday in support of winning netminder Brendan McGlynn, who made 26 saves. Daniel Mannella stopped all 18 shots he faced to record the shutout Saturday and Burns had two goals and two assists. Brandon Hughes, Max Lindsay, Josh Kosack and Rajic added singles in a game that featured three fights in the third period. Oakville will be home to North York tomorrow (Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Sixteen Mile) and visit the Chargers Saturday. Shooting woes costing Titans against top teams The Holy Trinity Titans can trap, screen and press all they want. But as the Halton senior boys' basketball playoffs begin today (Thursday), it might come down to something much more simple for the Titans to beat the likes of the Corpus Christi Longhorns or Bishop Reding Royals. "Sometimes, it's just knocking down shots," Titans coach Andrew Saulez said after Trinity's 48-40 loss to the visiting Longhorns last Thursday, Trinity's third defeat in as many meetings with Tier 1 powers Corpus Christi and Reding. "Our kids are doing a great job of getting to the right spots. Sometimes you make the shots, sometimes you don't." Neither team lit the nets on fire in last week's matchup. There were no points scored in the first three minutes of the game, and there was a six-minute scoreless stretch spanning the third and fourth quarters. But Trinity's fourth-quarter drought -- the Titans didn't score a field goal until 1:35 remained in the frame -- was the glaring difference in the game after the teams entered the fourth tied 33-33. "We finally stuck to our defensive scheme, which we didn't do in the first three quarters," Longhorns coach Ron Esteban said. Ignas Brazdeikis scored a game-high 19 points for Trinity, 14 of them coming in the first half, and Lucas Orlita added 10. Simisola Shittu, the Longhorns' Grade 10 phenom, answered with 17 points -- including a breakaway reverse dunk in the fourth quarter -- and Malik Richards scored 16 before fouling out. The Longhorns' win over Trinity essentially locked up the top three playoff positions in the Halton Tier 1 league. Corpus Christi won both its games this week to finish first at 13-0. Reding was second at 12-1, and the Titans -- who downed Christ the King 79-28 Monday and Jean Vanier 51-33 Tuesday -- came third at 11-2. Trinity will be home to King's Christian Collegiate this afternoon in one of four Tier 1 quarter-final games. If the top three seeds survive the quarter-final round, Trinity would face Reding -- a team it has lost to in both league and tournament play this season -- in the semis. "(Against Corpus Christi and Bishop Reding), in the second half we've been right there," Saulez said. "Hopefully we can put a full game together against these guys." -- Jon Kuiperij THE GYM NAUTILUS Est. 1982 Convenient, clean, and friendly. We're Oakville's best kept secret!
