www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, February 6, 2015 | 8 A $1-M Super Bowl win for Oakville man with Doritos ad by Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver Staff When the Super Bowl was decided on the final play of the game, countless office pool participants begrudgingly forked over a couple of bills to a friend dancing and pointing fingers in their face. For Scott Zabielski, the turning point came much earlier. It was during the second quarter during a break in the play. Sitting in a suite high above the field at University of Phoenix Stadium, the Appleby College graduate heard the words that would make him $1 million richer. "Welcome aboard folks, just go ahead and take any empty seat that you see." While the room erupted with the opening line of Zabielski's Doritos commercial, its creator sat there half stunned. In a daze "I was in a bit of daze," he said. "Everyone was high-fiving me and hugging me. I had seen it so many times, it just doesn't seem real. You just feel like you're watching a copy of it on a DVD. And then you realize, this is being seen around the world by millions of people." And while a dramatic finish was unfolding on the field, Zabielski had his own nervewracking moments waiting until the end of the game to find out if his commercial -- one of two aired by Doritos during Sunday's game -- was the big winner. Zabielski pulled the commercial together in the two weeks before the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl contest deadline on a shoestring budget of $2,000. And when he was finally told he was crowned this year's winner, he was certainly happy he took action when a friend mentioned the contest to him. Always a reason not to "A lot of times I had thought about doing a short film or a commercial on spec and I always came up with a thousand reasons why it wasn't going to work out or that I didn't have the time or money," he said. "So, this was a really good lesson to just do some stuff instead of saying I'll do that some day." His commercial was chosen as one of 10 finalists from more than 4,900 entries in 29 countries. Zabielski hoped to create a situation that everyone could relate to, and it obviously struck a chord as it earned the most votes of all the finalists.
