WEDNESDAY 1957 Another Parking Linjiii Just over week ago the chairmanxoi the traffic committee Alderman Padl dison introduced to Harrie Council sug gestion that within defined area down townunmetered parking in streets should be limited to three hours The unolllcial reason given for this wasthat it would help those coming into town to find space for their cars gt The reaction to this news by those who worked downtown was the most spontaneous witnessed over any council decision for more than year Plainly the employers and employees felt that the action was unjust ified and would create an unnecessary hard ship for them There is much to be said for their point of view1n the first place itis wrongto imagine that all those who work downtown only live urblockaway In this establish ment alone six persons come to worklgily from out of town The majority of the re maining 42 live on the outskirts of the mun icipality No one with an eye to truth can claim that the present bus service is so compre hensive and so good that those who live up near the Country Club or in the distant regionsbf the East End can leave their cars at thome and come by bus From the point of view of health it might be as well if all these people walked to work but what about those coming from Stayner and Midhursti 11 the town provided allday parking space downtown for those who have to work there then there could be little quarrel with this added restriction to the freedom of the motorist As it is there daily scramble by those who have to come by cur to find some place to leave it for the work ing day Accepting the played in the stores and offices have to bring their cars can Town Council honestly eirpect these people to move their cars every three hours Does Council really expect employers will look with favor on their employees dashing out every three hours for this purpose Most of these persons are taxpayers and all are helping to bring revenue to the town They are worthy of some consideration Perhaps it is because the town officials have adequate free parking facilities provid ed in the vicinity of the Town Hall that the traffic committee has lost touch with the difficulties of the worlgingjltizm Certain 1y this suggestion of parking which is well on the way to become law shows little thought asto its consequences Scouting Jubilee About 20 yearsafter the Indian Mutiny
