TEE BARRIE EXAMINER WEDNESDAY DEC 13 By STEVE JONESCU Sport Editor PEACH OF LUM At 1012 of the third period of last nights Georg ian Bay Hockey League game at Collingwood Ship builders led Bay City Falcons 42 lt Collingwood had just two players for minors This meant that Barrie could have the edge for the rest of the game When play resumed itwas six Barrie at tackers Don Rich was pulled against three host de fenders Fourteen seconds later during which time Fal cons kept the puck dangerously close to Shipbuilders net Collingwood goalie Lumley and Barries Ken Rob ertson were sentenced for what the referee called interference 17 This meant that Barrie would have only five at tackers Collingwood maintained its threeman unit as Lumleys penalty was delayed and would only come to effect in the case of overtime Barrie scored 10 seconds later 1936 That didnt do anything to the strength of either side but p11la little extra vim and vinegar in the hearts of the Vistt ors who were trying to get the tying goal But the big play was Lumleys penalty He came out of his goal crease to shove and swing at Robertson who was parked in the spot youd expect for tipin dont believe that Lumley really gave darn that Robertson was there Harry just used his old nogging He knew that if he started scuffle with Robertson rof Bill Magill would have to sentence them both Reason Lum started the pushing match and an of fensive player gets the gate any time he looks cross eyed at goaltender Referee Magill would have been embarrassed if he could have seen the chuckle Lum was having after the penalty call The goaltender had done his mis sion which was to bamboozle the official Rob ertson was an innocent victim of cagey oldtimcrs strategy COLLINGWOOD NOTES The arena was not nearly filled causing some concern to the faithful rooters of the Shipbuilders and yours truly was told that some of the fans are down on coach Jeep Jackson Theyre down on the rest of the club too which had lost three in row prior to last night Defenceman Stan Ritchie used both as forward and ablueliner said injuries were to blame for Ship builders notsohot showing to date JUST NOTES Saturday nights mixed bonspiel at Barrie Curling Club will have just one draw at eight oclock rather than the usual two The evening will be rounded with box social latenight snowfall made dri ng conditions little rough However the entertainment received in local restaurant in the wee hours of the morning more than madeup for the case of shakes that may have developed on the road This Is Promotion Bruins Call Chadwick By LAURENT Kingston Frontenacs of the Eastern Pro fessional Hockey League and the Boston management felt he deserved another tryout The Frontenacs are idle until the weekend so he wont be missed HAD HOT STREAK Chadwick set the hockey world buzzing back in 195556 when he registered two shut outs and allowed only three goals during fivevgame trial with Toronto Maple Leafs He was Torontos rcgular goaltender the next two sen sons turning in creditable per formances considering these were lean years fur the Leafs But in 105850 he losthis job to veteran Johnny Bower and the Leafssent him to Boston last season in exchange for goalie Don Simmons Heads chief claim to fame is his aggressive attitude towards intruders in the goal crease area which earned him 101 minutesiin penalties with Port land Buckaroos of the Western Leaguelast season and has in volved him in few skirmishes with opposing NHL forwards DEFENCE UNEELPFUL The Boston job isnt exactly the most sought after assign ment in the goaltending frater nitythesc days The rookie studded Bruin defencet corps isnt the most solid in the league and Hcads horrendous 408 goalsagainst average for But some observers have faulted his style included record 21600 fans at Sept 16 game in which Edmonton tied Toronto Argonauts of the Eastern Con ference 88 and one of the smallest crowds in Eskimo his tory when 9000 watched Ed monton play Winnipeg Blue Bombers Nov Wynn said he could not under stand the small attraction the club held for Edmonton fans when it was the best draw ing team on the road helping to draw record crowds at Ottawa and Hamilton last season it is evident we were too optimistic We had every rea son to believe we could expect at least an average 15000 to 16000 fans at every game in city which is the fourth largest in Canada instead we had an average of just over 13000 He said last year the club al lowed coach Eagle Keys to take 28 United States imports and number of Canadian players into camp Perhaps we were wrongas it does cost lot of money to bring in players and then sub sequently have to send them home This cos must be dras tically reduce Cleroux Sceiis fit Suspension MONTREAL CPD Cana dian
